So I thought I'd build a warrior as they seem pretty hard to find on my
server.
I'm building him in prot spec so he's a good tank, I've got to lvl 21 and
I'm going to start instances now.

My question is what is the tactics for a fight? Do I stay in defensive
stance all the time or use battle stance, charge and then switch and try to
keep the aggro?

I'm also thinking about gear, I'm planning on getting +stam and +agi, is
this a good chioce for prot spec?

Thanks.

Im my opinion charge is one of the worst options to start a fight in
an instance!

"Pull" or "Pulling" is so called for a reason, because that is
exacctly what you want to do, pull the mobs from their starting
position so they are away from any adds or patrolling mobs, or if they
run when near dead the dont go and wake up a load of friends!

Use that other skill (blood rage?) that generates 10 rage plus another
10 over time to give you a head start on generating threat. Plus if
you can, get a bow/gun and be the puller.

+sta and then +def I think is the common build for trying to avoid
being critted, but that shouldnt be too much of a concern at 21.

My advice is not to spec protection until you're done leveling. Even if you
do every instance you can on the way to 70, you'll be spending about 90% of
your time fighting outside the instance. Questing/grinding as a protection
warrior is an exercise in patience and it's not worth the hassle for the 10%
of the time you're in an instance. Furthermore, you don't really need to be
protection specced to do any instance up to level 60, and even then it's
questionable.

Or throwing daggers/axes. Those take up 0 bag slots,
and are just as good until you can find a bow or gun
that has useful stats. For pulling only a single throw
is necessary, so speed doesn't count, and with the
gear you can get I don't think the damage will count
for much threat generation.

What about +str for use with shields? That's much more
common at lower levels than +def.

Agility isn't a bad thing, its just not a priority. You want to look for
gear with stamina first and agility and strength second. It is also
doubtful you'll ever be able to get enough +agility to make a difference
with your armor. It may make a small difference now, but once you start
measuring your armor in thousands, it is largely irrelevant. Actually the
main reason a warrior would stack agility wouldn't be armor. Agility also
boosts your chance to dodge.

So basically take an item that has +stamina over something that just has
+agility or +strength. If you can find stuff with stamina and agility
that's even better.

I did forget a few important skills in my first post:

Shield Wall: Reduces damage taken by 75% for 10 seconds. 30 Minute cool
down. It is very effective in boss fights when the healer is low on mana.

Concussion Blow: Stuns Target. Very Usefull when CC breaks and you need to
buy time.

Last Stand: Gives you 30% of your life 20 seconds. A last ditch thing. You
lose the life after 20 seconds.

As mentioned I'm speccing in protection, not sure whether str would help
over the extra armor agi gives me or not?

With best regards, Shammy.

I levelled a warrior to 60 just to make it a tank but the problem is there
are not many going to low lvl instances and you end up levelling alone
mostly, you will have a lot of problems to level as prot (my friends in full
tier 2 had problems to level and it took ages as prot).
I levelled my warrior as arms with 15 pts in protection and that ALL you
need till high level instances (outland instances).
I did all instances from RFC till UBRS and untill 60 arms with 15 in prot
was more than enough.
Do NOT level as protection you will regreat it.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I supplied mine. Perhaps it's a
bit skewed because I've leveled enough characters that the low-level content
IS a mindless burden. If he wants to level slowly and inefficiently, that's
his business. Either way, the point remains that in terms of utility,
protection spec is not very useful until higher levels.

Protection warriors need +Defense gear before anything else! As soon as you
can get +Defense gear, get it.

Even if you want to go with a 'full' protection spec, I'd put my first
8 talent points into Arms.
5/5 Imp Parry
3/3 Imp Thunderclap

Those add up to an extra 15% damage mitigation. Also, imp TC is the
only talent you'll need to keep agro off of the healers on up to 4
mobs. It lets you concentrate on the main target without having to tab
around to keep agro on other mobs.

It's debatable but I'd also take 5/5 cruelty before working on the
protection talents.

On the protection side, the 'must have' talents are Improved Shield
Block and Defiance. Imp Shield Block doesn't sound that useful but any
attack that you block can't be a crushing blow (or crit?) so it keeps
you from taking the big damage spikes. Shield slam is nice if you go
that deep into protection.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the hybrid protection builds such as
35/5/21. You can still deal damage decently and it gives you all of
the really useful protection talents other than shield slam.

>My question is what is the tactics for a fight? Do I stay in defensive
>stance all the time or use battle stance, charge and then switch and try to
>keep the aggro?

Sometimes you charge but it's rare. What you open with depends on
whether you have Shield Slam or not. If you do, it's:

Pull - Blood Rage - Shield Slam - TC - Shield Block - Revenge....

without Shield Slam, it's:

Pull - Blood Rage - Shield Block - Revenge - TC ...

After that, Shield Slam, Revenge and TC have priority whenever they're
up. Add shield block to that if you're fighting a boss or need it to
light up Revenge. You can throw in a sunder or Demoralizing Shout if
you have the time and que up Heroic strike/cleave if you have spare
rage since those don't use the global coodown.

>I'm also thinking about gear, I'm planning on getting +stam and +agi, is
>this a good chioce for prot spec?

Stamina, defense dodge, parry, block are your main stats but it's hard
to find the last 3 pre-60. That ignores armor because that tends to be
pretty equal among gear of a certain level.

Mainly it's all about stamina though, the more hitpoints you have the
more time you have to recover from a bad damage spike.

I'd also keep a separate set of sta/str/agi/crit gear for those times
when you want to DPS.

I've never played a warrior, but isn't some strength important for a prot
warrior too, to improve the damage absorption from shield blocks? *

I second that. Use tanking gear, but don't spec for tanking.

Once you go to Outlands, you'll have to spec for it to do it right.

Does anyone have a list of +defense gear? No way to do a search for it
in AH that I know of.

I wouldn't say that you need to really concentrate on +defense gear until
you hit 70. If you're still leveling, don't worry about it.

But you're right, there is no good in-game way to search for individual
stats on items. You'll have to use some out-of-game resources.

I'd start with www.wow-loot.com. This website has a very good listing of
5-man dungeon loot and quest reward items for every class, and it gives
suggestions for a complete kit of gear at level 70 for every class.

You can also try thottbot's armor search. It lets you plug in values for
individual stats like defense, armor, stam, etc.
