I am currently working on the Frozen Shadoweave set for my recently
reached level 70 warlock. I am currently Felguard specced and am
not particularly inclined to change though if I do change, it would
probably be back to Affliction.

Can anyone (looking in your direction lcpltom) advise on gems for
them? I find myself at a bit of a loss when perusing the AH trying
to figure out what I should use in what socket.

Since I am still grinding for my epic flyer, I am not rolling in
extra cash, so what are good cheap to mid level gems I would want
to be looking for?

If you plan to do 5-mans or any raiding, you need spell hit. Wowwiki
has information on spell hit and how much you need vs a level 72 (5-
man) boss or a 73 (raid) boss. Next up would be spell damage. Since
you're felguard specced, your felguard gains attack power based on
your spell damage. Pushing your spell damage up boosts his attack
power. Not so much important for other pets, as if you're using a
succy its for CC, and you won't attack at all with an imp. Follow
that with stamina or spell crit. Stamina gives you more chances to
life tap, increasing your mana (and your pets mana if you have mana
feed). Spell crit will go towards the shadowbolts, immolates, or
incinerates you'll be casting as your main DPS in a group.

I don't know any gem names off the top of my head, but Wowwiki has a
good guide to gems. Also, if you fish, do the fishing daily for a
chance for a +15 stamina gem. Also, complete the initial quest line
for Magister's Terrace, the end reward is not only the ability to run
Heroic MgT, but also a choice of a nice gem.

Since you're not rolling in cash, go for green quality for the time
being. If you ever plan on raiding, its worth upgrading to blue or
epic gems. Sure, the difference might only be 1 or 2 points per gem,
but the cumulative effect of upgrading all your gems can make a
visible difference.

The last thing to look at is the socket bonus on an item. If you need
the socket bonus, go for it. If not, forget it. The FSW robe, for
example, has +3 spell hit as a socket bonus. Its worth going for that
bonus to help with your spell hit.

And as far as matching socket colors, remember that there are 6
different colors of gems, and if you know your primary and secondary
colors its easy to understand. Red, yellow, and blue gems (primary
colors), and green, orange, and purple gems (secondary colors). Red,
yellow, and blue will only match those colors, while green will match
yellow and blue (yellow and blue make green seal, so I know its closed
HA), purple matches red or blue, and orange matches yellow or red.
That means they match those sockets, so if you have a red and a blue
socket, you can put 2 purple gems and still get the socket bonus.

Once you have an epic flying mount, dailies and gathering professions
become so easy that they just hand you gold, so go with green quality
gems for now, worry about the better stuff once you have an epic flyer.

It depends on what you are looking to do.

For raiding (i.e. kara), you need to raise your spellhit significantly, which
is a hard thing for a warlock to do -- I'm decked out in the new badge gear,
plus kara and ZA drops, and my spellhit is still 76 points too low.

For grinding, I would recommend lots of +stam gems. That's how I geared
myself when I was demo-spec. +spelldam is also good to have.

There is only a small difference in quality between green and blue gems, but
a huge difference in price (2-4g for the green gems, 20-40g for the blue
gems). If saving money is a priority, then I'd recommend sticking with the
cheaper gems. Also look around for gems you can get for free, such as quest
rewards and vendor items.

You might want to decide what meta gem you are going with and plan
accordingly. For example, the mystical skyfire diamond that I have requires
more blue gems than yellow gems (which is a constant irritation as I'd like
to gear myself with yellow +spellhit gems). Unless you have engineering
(goggles), then it might be a good long while before you get an headpiece
that can accommodate a meta-gem anyway, so this may not be an issue for you.

Also, know that you don't have to match the sockets to the gem colors if you
don't care about the socket bonus. For example, if you have a piece of gear
that gives you +5 resilience if you put a blue gem in a blue socket, and you
don't care about +5 resilience, then feel free to put any gem you want in
there.

FSW gear is really nice when you first hit 70 and if you go affliction
it will be some of the best gear you get until are in SSC and TK. You
will probably need to gem a bit for hit, but don't nerf your dmg at
the same time. I would recommend using Veiled Noble Topaz as a main
gem for your sockets, the socket bonus for FSW kit is +3 spell hit so
you get more benefit from just using orange gems instead of orange and
blue. If you are felguard spec you will want the extra stam from the
blue sockets since your stam boosts your spell dmg and your felguards
AP. And if you have a meta socket you might need a couple blue gems
to activate it.

Felguard is really a much more viable spec for lvling and soloing tho
than raiding and doing dungeons. Felguard isn't useful in raids when
you compare that extra talent point you need for him to siphon life or
ruin (drool .. ruin...).
