We tried another experiment in the "doubles tournaments" again
yesterday, and actually managed to get in 12 participants. I can't
remember all six pairings, but aside from me being paired with my dad
so I could help him, it was all random. 1250 points each, so 2500
points combined.

Teams that I can remember included:
Tom & Erik (Skaven & Orcs)
Joey & Mike (Tomb Kings & Chaos Warriors)
Joe C. & Nanner (Lizards & Dwarfs)
John & Cliff (both Wood Elves... ugh)
Wes & Kieran (Brets & Dwarfs)
Can't remember who the last pairing was, since I didn't play them, and
didn't recognize the players.

All three battles were Piched Battles, with the whole terrain setup
rules and all.

My dad took three solid blocks of rats with six Jezzails, three
Engineers, and 10 Gutter Runners. I took two blocks of Orcs, a block
of Black Orcs, Night Gobbos with a Fanatic, 5 Boar Boyz led by Warboss
on Boar, 8 Wolf Riders, and a Wolf Chariot. Not exactly the most
effective lists, but Jon (the guy running the tourney) was using an
alternate comp scoring system from Illinois, and I was trying to go
for effective and good scoring. Bit of a mistake there...

Each round had a two hour time limit, which often started while people
were getting things to their table, much less deploying!

Round 1: Joe & Nanner
The time limit killed this game. The opposing army was filled with
lots of small units, while we had big units trying to move around.
The only things killed worth points were two units of Skinks, a Cannon
which blew up with its crew (including Master Engineer) when Nanner
decided to reroll a bounce-over result, a unit of Kroxigors, and some
other assorted stuff on that side; on our side, the Wolf Riders and
two injured Engineers I think was it (the Engineers hurt themselves).
Result: Win

Round 2: John & Cliff
Okay, this is going to be a bit of a rant. I hate the Wood Elves. I
REALLY hate the Wood Elves. Especially when these two guys are
playing together. Oh, it's a Pitched Battle, so they get free woods!
They set up two big blocks of woods to funnel units around, and one on
the hill the Jezzails would be on (one of those funneling blocks was
their free wood). So what happens? Two horde armies getting in their
own ways because of such a small area to get through, while Wood Elf
units are sitting in or around woods in such a way as to not be seen,
but can march block. How can a tiny unit march block someone who
can't even see it? Not only that, at one point I had a unit of Dryads
positioned right in front of my Boar Boyz, had to charge them or be
charged. Problem is, whether I overran or not, that would present a
flank charge to Wardancers. No way around it. The whole Wood Elf
army pranced around out of line of sight, moving just enough to be out
of LOS until they could get flank or rear charges with their
Wardancers and tooled up Alter Kindred Nobles. With all that, they
also spent a LOT of time "discussing strategy", though knowing their
style of play I'd expect they were really stalling to kill time,
allowing them to kill some stuff with archery, spells, and select
charges before time ran out. An annoying game to play, and when
presented the chance to play one more turn, I declined, it was just
too painful to go on.
Result: Loss

Round 3: Wes & Kieran
Ironically, the 2-0 WE team was ranked #3 at this time, due to "soft
scores" being counted for the Swiss set-up. Meaning this should be
the game to determine it all! It was a heck of a game, with Knights
fighting all across the board, Dwarves shooting up my poor Black Orcs,
and a single Fanatic finally killing something that wasn't green on
the day. By the end of it all, my Black Orcs, some Gutter Runners, my
Chariot, and my Boar Boyz were dead, whereas some Dwarven artillery,
most of the Pegasus Knights (just ONE wound he kept saving on the unit
champion!), and the Knights of the Realm were dead on the other side.
I might have missed something or other. But it was about to reach a
crescendo... and time ran out.
Result: Draw

Well, that draw did it... that, and the usual issues with Kieran (he
decided to score sportsmanship without input from his teammate, and I
felt like an idiot for giving them decent scores when I saw what he
did). The end result was a 22-point overall loss to the Elves, but he
was scoring all points double. Even a draw with the Elves would have
meant a win overall, but that wasn't going to happen. The Elves ended
up 3-0 (no surprise), we ended up 1-1-1 but the soft scores really
went well (lots of bonus points for comp, sportsmanship - last game
notwithstanding - and painting, as well as best army).

Final Results:
Overall: John & Cliff
2nd Place/Best Painted: Tom & Erik
Favorite Opponents: Joey & Mike

Next time, I'm going less for comp and more for winning.

it's sounds like you went to a tournament not expecting the usual
tournament d-baggery.

I underestimated your foolishness again.

I hadn't been in a WFB tournament since January, and in that one there
were no Wood Elf armies and the "cheesiest" army was Steve G.'s Chaos
Dwarfs with, I think, 2 Earthshakers and 3 Bolt Throwers (not so bad,
overall).

Besides, I'm an optimist...

Now I feel so great... During this game, a unit of Pegasus Knights
was charged in the front by Gutter Runners and the rear by Wolf
Riders. Well, Kieran (the Dwarf player, mind you) tried his "I know
EVERYTHING!" approach and kept arguing there was no rear charge bonus
because they were skirmishers. Well, I thought I remembered
different, so I didn't want to argue. Even better, this "master of
the rules" remarked that the "+1 bonus" wouldn't help.

So I'm checking the FAQs last night, brushing up on the rules, and
there it is: Skirmishers form a "front" facing the unit that charged
them first, and then have a flank and rear for result purposes. And
yeah, rear chargers get a +2 bonus.

So not only would the Knights have broken on the first roll (Wes
rolled a 4; their Ld is 8, they were down by 3 already, the extra 2
would make it -5 so he needed a 3), but also a lot of tied combats
would not have been tied with that extra 2 CR.

And the worst part of it is, Kieran had the gall to mark down
sportsmanship (without consulting his teammate, of course) despite
people caving to his pisspoor attitude.

rule book on you at that time. erik in the mean time i got give your
prop on tanking your own army and not realizing that your suppose to
bring chesse in a 2 man tourney so you can cover your back. but hey
you say what you want i keep playing 40k you seem to do better anyway
in that game than wwf batte anyway.

I had it on me, but crack open a rulebook and you're not just carrying
on the argument, you're guaranteeing an egoist who thinks he knows all
the rules will score you down on sportsmanship.

To be fair, when I posted the FAQ on the forum without directing who
it was in relation to, he did say "my bad".

I like playing both games, and I don't like the idea of resorting to
cheese. The problem is that we still use that bloody
comp/sportsmanship system, both of which are wide open for your
opponent to use any opportunity to hit you up. It was a very close
overall loss, so there's something to be said for playing to the soft
scores... unless someone's going to tank you on them anyway.

Personally, if we're going to keep being saddled with them, I'd LOVE
to see sportsmanship be averaged for each match. So if someone gives
a score of like 4 but the other guy gives 0, both get only 2. That
way people won't be so quick to tank an opponent on a game that
obviously couldn't have been so bad as to get low scores (because
otherwise they wouldn't be getting decent scores themselves). It'd be
nice to try it, anyway.
