After coming within a few years of a victory, someone called a UN vote
and I ended up losing. I think that part of the game is bogus. What
would make countries vote for someone else. They all voted for India
and no one voted for me even though I really hadnt gone to war with any
of them or cheated them in any way.Did they vote for india because they
were afraid? Why would they vote for another country?

The first big influence is wars. The AI will vote for its war
allies pretty often.

Second is who likes who best. It is the current attitude which
affects the situation, so if more civs are friendly to India than you,
they'll tend to vote for India.

The best defense against a UN vote is to own the UN yourself.
Letting someone else build it means risking a loss. The owner of the
UN can stop the election if he isn't going to win.

Because they cannot vote for themselves. There are only a few candidates and
thus, they have to choose either of the candidates or abstain. When they
abstain, it's most likely because they dislike all candidates. Otherwise,
they'll chose "the lesser evil" (ie, the nation they dislikes the most)
simply from an "If I vote for this guy who resemmbles me the most, I'll get
a better world"-pov

AI civs always seem to favor AI civs.
Possibly because they trade everthing fairly etc.

I hate that victory method and play with that option turned off.

Or uncheck the diplomatic victory box in the custom game menu. This
means no-one can build the UN.

I hate the space victory and usually disable it. It isn't that I find it
hard to win that way, but I find it boring.

The first diplomatic victory I won was when I decided to conquer the
world. No one declared war on me during the entire game. I ended up
with trades and MPPs with nearly every country. When I built the UN,
I saved the game and tested the victory. To my surprise, I won.
Funny thing was I didn't even vote for myself.

I have won several other games, but never when I start the game with
the diplomatic as the goal. I have learned to recognize the
conditions in which I can and cannot win. Yes, I have lost quite a
few too.

Be a bootlicker: when you have some resource or luxury good that you can't
trade for good, because others have no money or resource/good to trade for
it, it's always useful to give it as a present to another Civ. Possibly, not
one who's attacking you in the next couple of turns Wink
This way I have been very close to a diplomatic victory 2 times, with a good
half of the civs voting for me even if I had only 1 MPP with one of them,
but they were all from friendly to satisfied with me. I got elected Chief of
the UN all the times except one, when Isabella (Spain) won one election,
then again it was only me. Unluckily, I never went over a good 10% under the
votes needed for a diplomatic victory (last game I remember, I scored in the
low 700's while the Diplo-Vic was at 810).
I started with sheeps and cows to see if it worked well and I started
gifting almost everything when I saw other civs always friendlier with me.
Expecially when you're going to sell soemthing for very few, remember that
this "few" is probably not worth the diplomatic advantages of giving that
something just for free and making friends.

It's all about incentive to vote - why would they vote for you if
someone else did more to earn their vote in wars, trades, technologies
and such..That's always the most critical things to Diplomatic
victories. Its not about how big or powerful you are, but how well the
others like you enough to win.

I've become quite popular by giving gifts of excess resources (more
rarely old technologies) to nations I don't consider a serious
competitor. Specially when they invite me to a war I don't want to
fight, or otherwise become dissatisfied with me. It's a nice end to a
touchy discussion. They do get rather sappy after receiving a gift,
though. Wink
