Be a bootlicker: when you have some resource or luxury good that you can't
trade for good, because others have no money or resource/good to trade for
it, it's always useful to give it as a present to another Civ. Possibly, not
one who's attacking you in the next couple of turns
This way I have been very close to a diplomatic victory 2 times, with a good
half of the civs voting for me even if I had only 1 MPP with one of them,
but they were all from friendly to satisfied with me. I got elected Chief of
the UN all the times except one, when Isabella (Spain) won one election,
then again it was only me. Unluckily, I never went over a good 10% under the
votes needed for a diplomatic victory (last game I remember, I scored in the
low 700's while the Diplo-Vic was at 810).
I started with sheeps and cows to see if it worked well and I started
gifting almost everything when I saw other civs always friendlier with me.
Expecially when you're going to sell soemthing for very few, remember that
this "few" is probably not worth the diplomatic advantages of giving that
something just for free and making friends.
