It was actually one of the more credible ones. One claimed the girl
would be killed by the red haired kid. Another one had Harry and
Voldermort (or whatever the main baddie is called) jump through a door
or portal of some kind and both get killed (sounds more like Sherlock
Holmes at a waterfall). Not to mention the suicides, rapes and worse
things people came up with. And then there were the parents that came
back to life. Only to turn out to be even worse than Voldermort.

| I use aMSN instead of MSN.
|
| Foxit reader for PDF files.
|
| Of course there's VLC for most multimedia stuff, even streaming.
|
| But I bet you know all three of them.

Nope, I use Miranda IM as a replacement for both MSN and Jabber and I
use Media Player Classic for video stuff, Winamp Light for music (even
though I have no sound card in my computer). I do use Foxit Reader
though. I have some others here:

InfraRecorder as a replacement for Nero
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

EditPlus as a replacement for DreamWeaver
http://www.editplus.com/

7-zip as a replacement for Winzip and Winrar
http://www.7-zip.org/

Just the one thing I've never found is a lightweight image editor that
does all the things Photoshop or Paintshop Pro do.

Vista costs more than they're willing to spend on a new PC. But I know
of many people that think a new, bigger, OS will actually speed a PC up.
Even burn CD's faster.

Just make VLC look and feel as MPC. They can keep the traffic cone in
though.

Yep, zip has the better compatibility. Never came across .7z's though.
Winrar shall remain.

Winzip became Nero. Tsk...

Luckily I'm not involved with any webpage programming currently. I found
it too cumbersome. Liked designing, but all the behind the scenes stuff,
code for counters and the way it looked totally different in other
browsers or on other screen sizes took the joy out of it.

Been there, done that. A little, anyway. Pixia came out best so far.
Gimshop had horrible reviews (crashing, never starting or looking the
same as regular Gimp). So I didn't even try Gimpshop. Some others look
like PSP 3, only less clean. I only tried free Windows ones, and things
don't look great, only judging on the interfaces.

DG mehawa...
| VLC is very good for people that rather not fuss with codex stuff. So
| that's why I advise it to most users, especially novice ones.

True, I've seen people being very happy with VLC. And it's enormously
CPU efficient, that's what I really like about it. Now if somebody could
take the best of VLC and the best of Media Player Classic I'd be happy
as well.

| I keep Winrar. It has opened every archive file I've gotten recently
| without update nags. That may however tell more about the limited
| variation of archive files I come across.

Well, the reason I got 7-zip actually was that I used to come across .7z
files which Winzip and Winrar couldn't open at the time. I found it
quite annoying that once again I needed to install a new program for
some or the other exotic archiving format. Then I found out I quite
liked 7-zip, so I stuck with it ever since. As of today however, I don't
think it provides any significant advantages over Winrar. They both can
open the most common archiving formats without problems and come in
installers of about 1 MB. It's just that Winrar is good at making .rar
files and 7-zip is good at making .7z files, but I always save
everything as .zip anyway.

Winzip however has totally taken the wrong road, I believe. The latest
installer is about 9 MB and comes with an integrated DVD-burner and FTP-
client... :s

| I haven't worked a lot with Dreamweaver. Just enough to know it needed
| to be easier. EditPlus is text orientated, am I right? Not the wysiwyg I
| prefer.

EditPlus is a text-based editor indeed. And a very good one at that. As
for wysiwyg-editors, I've played around a bit with Quanta Plus on Linux
and I must say it's rather good. Apparently Microsoft's Expression Web
is rather good as well and it delivers everything in valid xhtml and
css. However...it also comes with this new Silverlight thingy.

| For image editing you could use GIMP, but I found it unusable because of
| the interface. There's a great variation in image software. Vector
| based, raster based, photo orientated, drawing orientated and so on.
| Nothing does it all unless it's absolutely huge, CPU heavy or expensive.
|
| <snip>
|
| http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Raster_graphics_editors

I could use GIMP indeed, but I find its interface a horrible thing as
well. Of course you could install Gimpshop, but that still doesn't make
the interface "normal". What I use now is Paintshop Pro 9, because I
mainly use an image editor for editing photos. I still think PSP 7 was
much, much better in terms of loading times though. But what I should do
is go through that list, install the most promising ones and find the
ultimate image editor.

| That Infrarecorder sounds good. Don't know if I need it though.

Well, I think it's a good replacement for Nero. It's a bit similar to
CloneCD. But then again, who still burns CDs and DVDs these days?

Hmmm, yes, I think that after PSP 7, they redid it, and it turned out
way bigger and takes a lot longer to load. But it did come with better
features I think.

Version 7 runs on my 95 PC.

Noo! Not the traffic cone!! That's awful!!

Well, coding for different pc browsers is not the end of the world, but
if you want your website to look properly on on browsers that come with
mobile phones these days, well, that's a true horror!

Well, I will do it some day in the future. I'm actually rather satisfied
with PSP 9. It's just that in the end I'd like a free, lightweight
alternative.

Oh yes, that also goes for the sort of internet connection they have.

use my mouse, which I find much easier than using only the keyboard."

I like the features of PSP 9 better indeed, but I still think they could
have easily implemented them in PSP 7 while keeping the good memory
usage.
