My girlfriend's laptop died a few weeks back, so now we have a new
laptop. But it came with Vista.

Did anyone else get Vista yet?
I hates it.

I've tried the free 30 day thing. I liked it, but I didn't get too deep
into it. My XP-system is working fine as it is, so I'm not changing
quite yet.

You need to be administrator to do EVERYTHING everywhere. And even
though I am, I still need to confirm this twice for every action.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. It didn't bother me at all. I've
heard other people whine about it too. It looks great, much better than
I thought it would. But I'm not that interested in how it looks. The
current configuration isn't broken, so why fix it. I'll keep XP on 'till
I buy something new. That might take up to three years unless there's
some multi core or Vista-hungry app.

I have a very specific way of ordering my start-menu, which Vista now
makes hell. It looks alright though, but I switched it to Classic Mode
within 10 minutes or so. Just as we had with XP really.

Also, it seems to have more than half of the c-drive directories set
to hidden, for some reason. Oh my god, I might delete win.com and then
accidently format C:...

Wait... so Pixel, who we used to laugh at for having some ancient OS,

Yeah, he went so far to the left that he appeared on the other side of
the screen. Like in Pacman.

A slender Pacman with longish hair.

Pacman looks like a wheel of dutch cheese with a bit missing, so that's
fitting too.

Well, I did that too. Then it also dawned on me that it looks very
familiar under the hood. That's actually a good thing, but it's not the
promised revolution except for some graphical stuff.

> Also, it seems to have more than half of the c-drive directories set

You *never* did that?

I actually had to scramble once when someone I knew said "I got to
delete this virus file, because some e-mail said so". Sure enough it was
a hoax that made people delete some system file. I had received
something similar years earlier but I decided not to delete the thing
but to move it. I ended up putting it back via DOS.

Other fun mishaps:
The computer won't start: they used the extension cord button to shut
down the PC. I had used the button on the PC the previous time, so now
starting with the extension cord button wouldn't work...

I've installed this fun program that puts smileys in e-mails, but now my
PC is slow and my e-mail doesn't work. How do you mean remove that
program? But I like the smileys! All my friends have them...

After re-installing XP and choosing the correct keyboard driver: "Ooh,
all the images on the PC now match the letters on the keyboard. I'll
have to learn the whole keyboard anew now."

I suspected I had a virus. There was this pop-up that told me so. But it
should be gone now I installed that program...

How do I get that funny character that's in the middle of an e-mail?

My friend from the chatroom told me to sign up for SMS-chatting since
it's for free. Actual cost: something like 50ct a message that gets sent
to you. It's free for the people that send you messages from the chat
room. But how to cancel?

I don't understand English, so I just click OK. What do you mean
spyware? I didn't do that. It must have been the kids.

When the Windows Genuine Advantage started showing up: I don't care what
my Windows says. It isn't illegal. I got it from the guy from the shop
down the street. He put it on my PC for free since we're such good
customers.

I've had to say "Don't touch the computer 'till I get there" too often.

Well, yes, I can't help it, they don't do 15 year old OS's anymore on
the new laptops you buy these days. But I have installed Windows
Virtual PC, so I'll have it up and running in no time.

Also, I still have my own trusty PC, that still runs win95, from which
I am posting this as we speak.
