Anyone else think the folks over at Virtual Atlanta ARTCC (and all of
VATSIM for that matter) are too controlling? pardon the pun! Online
flying / controlling could be so fun, but they have made it like a
second job - for which I do not have the time.

Oh, I never had anyone be rude to me on purpose like that. I just have
two problems with them: first is they require all this training bologna
and you have to have mentors and all this garbage and second is you
have to have permission of controllers above you even after you are
"trained". If one senior controller gets on there and wants to control
everything from clearance delivery to center, he can! what pilot wants
to get everything on one frequency from the same, I'm sorry, ding-dong?
I would much rather see someone on every position that was trying
their best and was friendly, than one highly proficient jerk that
"doesn't have time for pilot training" because he's too conceited to
let anyone work below him.

Yep! I had one bad experience in the past. But nothing recent. One
controller used a three letter abbreviation he issued to me and it was one
with which I was not familiar. I asked what that abbreviation meant, to
which he responded, "Don't have time for pilot training". Then he
completely ignored my plane. He sounded like he was having a bad experience
and I think I just got in the way of one of his barbs. Within 10 minutes of
that comment, he hastily signed off, "Atlanta Center is closing
immediately". Might be that one of the supervisors monitoring, chastised
him for his response with a private chat. I do longer see his name listed
on the Atlanta ARTCC website. I think he was taking it a little too
seriously. If you hobby get to be like work, time to switch hobbies. My
experience occurred likely 10-12 months ago.
I DO NOT agree that there is a rude or too rigid controller problem at
Atlanta currently.

Don't think I have any experience with Miami but found a very helpful
controller in the KPNS area of the Florida panhandle. He stated he was a
real live Navy controller. Geez! When you hobby mimics your real job how do
you know when you are OFF work. But he was very helpful with other pilots
on line as well.

You want a great bunch of guys, go to the Colorado or Texas ATC areas. Very
helpful to newbies, and with a lot of patience.

There is also a controller at Santa Monica, KSMO, just north of KLAX, who is
excellent and extremely helpful and informative. Any newby who wants to try
online flying could start there, sit and listen for 30 minutes to get the
hang of things. He is terrific. I took from KSMO on a VFR plan to KAVX,
Catalina Island, about 40 miles south. He explained the procedure to cross
directly over KLAX by taking off from KSMO to the west, make a 270 degree
turn to the right, crossing over the center of KLAX. Most helpful.
