Let's see the sales list of top 10 games in Japan and what systems
they are for:
Here are the latest Japanese console software sales for the week of
Feb 5 - 11, 2007:

1. (PS3, Sega) - 48,346 units
2. (Wii, Nintendo) - 45,897
3. (Wii, Nintendo) - 36,090
4. (NDS, Nintendo) - 32,800
5. (NDS, Nintendo) - 29,026
6. (PS2, Capcom) - 27,519
7. (NDS, Nintendo) - 26,815
8. (NDS, Marvelous) - 26,804
9. (NDS, Marvelous) - 25,676 units
10. (PS2, Sega) - 24,468

PS3 on top this week, with an arcade game that has top billing. Then
comes the Nintendo flood, Wii and DS. And then in the mix two PS2
games.

Nintendo OWNS Japan this time around. No sense in fighting it. Even
Sony has to bow to the power of Nintendo. By the way, wasn't Blue
Dragon top selling title one week in Japan? 360 had a blip.

And "Next Friday" starring Ice Cube was the best selling movie one weekend.

So what? What was its competition?

The fact is, they sold far less copies of VF5 than they expected. Far less.

Agreed. VF5 was probably the only game announced for the PS3 that
would get me somewhat interested in having a PS3. But I can wait
til' it comes out for the 360....Should be even better by then ^_^.

one can only hope because from what I've read VF5 has fallen way short.
But then the PS3 will get the VF5 Evo

Clearly VF5 is tanking, especially as the week before, the top selling
new entry sold 107,073, more than twice that of VF5.
Furthermore, Wii Sports, a game that has been on the market in apan
for over 2 months, is still barely 3-4k behind VF5.

The PS3 has a installed base of circa 650k in Japan, considering the
brand name, the popularity of VF5 in the territory, and the newness of
the system and games-starvation the PS3 has had recently, one would
expect significantly higher sales!

Furthermore, game sales there were down 159,240 from the previous
week!

VF5 was merely lucky it was the only new release that week

I don't think anybody, even us Xbox 360 fans, really ever expected the
system to do well in Japan. I mean come on... the Japanese consumers
have NEVER liked software developed by American companies, which is
why Microsoft was trying so damn hard to persuade Japanese developers
to make games for their system.

What's significant is that the PS3 is selling well below expectations
on its home turf. I mean come on... this is Sony Playstation we're
talking about here. I might not like the systems or the company, but
there's no denying the power of that brand.

And while the 360 isn't doing very well at all in that country, it's
significant that Blue Dragon did well during its launch and is still
selling relatively well considering it's a 360 game... and even more
significant that Gears of War, an AMERICAN made FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER
(which Japanese people hardly ever play) sold incredibly well.

In the end, though, I wonder if the Japanese market even really
matters anymore. Sure, the Japanese developers are all important but
the consumer market hasn't really been that relevant for a while. The
American market is much more lucrative and even the European and
Australian markets are bigger nowadays.

In any case, Sony should be very worried about the possibility of
losing exclusive franchises. They already lost the hands-down number
one franchise in their portfolio from their previous generation with
GTA IV coming out on 360. The rumors of MGS4 on the 360 may be false,
but now VF5 is coming out on MS's system and who knows what other
companies will not so much make the switch but test the waters.

Blue Dragon debuted at number 4, with 82,286 copies sold that week
(still almost twice what VF5 sold its first week).

has Gears of War in the top ten, selling 33,212 copies, or more than 2/3
what VF5 sold in its first week (tho the 360 had nothing in the top 30
the previous week).

sales, and no.1 'win' - but VF5 slides all the way down to no 20 on
the japanese sales chart, selling just 64,000 copies!

So far, Japan has only bought 718,500 PS3 games! That's barely 1.5 per
PS3 owner out there!!!

Isn't this what Blue Dragon did? One week blip for the 360, then
dropped off? Just like Gears of War actually.

Nintendo is locking down Japan.
