UK Virgin Media have got a new beta news service at news.virginmedia.com.

I tried it out and found they had added both the Sims2 binaries and the text
service Sims2 groups.

All you have to do is go to Accounts, Add,

news.virginmedia.com

with usual details and download groups as usual. I just put in "sims" and
came up with the extras.

The Sims2 groups don't seem to be used much but that is possibly as there is
no cache to catch up on.

hth someone.

I'm currently using news.cable.ntlworld.com for binaries (and
news.individual.net for everything else), but they (that is, Virgin) haven't
added any new binary groups for a long time. I'll give the new server a try!

Paul.

Me an' kat did that last week. I subscribed to the 'extra' sims groups
(which used to be on the ntl server but were stopped I think). However, I
have already unsubscribed since there is nothing on the extras except lovely
posts such as 'me doing my sister' (this was an actual post).

I'm not sure there's a big advantage unless the new service keeps the
binaries group for longer.

Best wishes
maxon

It looks to me like Virgin are unifying their servers. Currently there are
the ntl servers for ntl customers and blueyonder servers for Telewest
customers. As Virgin Media are now the sole company (a result of the merger
between ntl and Telewest), it seems they are merging the news servers as
well.

alt.games.the-sims2 has posts going back to April 2006. But not many! The
other binaries group is empty, but no doubt the retention on binaries is
much lower amongst the peers, so here was nothing recent enough. Or no-one
uses it. I recall it being mentioned at times, but if pople couldn't get
it, others weren't going to use it either.

Eventually it will be the only server. The old text.BY server might
remain, under its new name of course, and might or might not be accessible
off net to ex-ntl people. It is to ex-BY people. We shall see. Getting an
answer out of the staff when asking is like pulling teeth made of ice with
hot pliers.
