I see that in the expansion pack for Civ IV, "Warlords", the Viking leader
will wear a helmet with horns. That is poor research on Firaxis' part. The
Vikings did not wear horned helmets, for obvious reasons; they would not be
a good idea in battle. The only horned helmets in history have been found in
Celtic graves, and they were probably purely ceremonial.

Yes. So much better to have used something modeled on the Sutton Hoo,
it would have been accurate as well as beautiful. Ah well. I also find
things like that distracting from the enjoyment of an otherwise good
game.

I think the Vikings were in the beef (cattle) business.

According to the book Collapse, the Vikings insistance on cattle as a
foodsource was a major contribution to the demise of thier Greenland
colonies (which stood for over 400 years).

So that is the reason why so many brits today resemble cows?

Without being _too_ nasty to the remaining brits... our people _did_
take the prettiest ones back to Norway with them. You know, "Give us
your pretty daughter and we'll stop invading your country" "Oh, ok".
5 years later, it's "So...has she got a sister, then?"

Cattle has been important to scandinavians all the way to this day. Still is
cause of the meat and milk. The Vikings discovered this early and the cows
are also resistant to the cold winter and was an ideal animal for this
climath.

The reason why there are so many british women resembling cows is because
they're mostly french (norman) - the true, pure british woman (celt) is by
far suprerior

The Normans were not French, they were near relatives of the Vikings
from Scandinavia ("Norse-men") who happened to have colonised NW France,
among many other places (including, incredibly enough, Sicily).

oh my god mate take a chill pill - just a wild generalisation - the same
kind of generalisation about british women being cows - take a dig at a
nation's women by all means but woe betide anyone who makes an historical
generalisation because the know-it-alls will be sure to make you know about
it

Luisiana was settled by the french (=frogs). Mexico was under french
rule in the 1850's (= frogs). The british immigrants were descendants of
normans (=frogs). Ireland belonged to britain so irish immigrants =
frogs. Swedish women have naturally wide mouths and so on. (ignorant
generalizations are easy to make and can be fun..).

More seriously: it takes quite a lot for a populations gene pool to
shift upon an invasion/settlement. To return to some more serious point
in this thread my educated guess would be that even though the invading
Normands in 1066 were descendants of viking colonization in northern
France the settlers were mostly men and quite few compared to the local
population. The shift in the gene pool would therefore not have been so
big in Normandie, although certainly noticable.

Certainly noticeable; there is a fairly large occurrence among
Norman-colonised areas of pale skin and reddish hair typical of the
original Norse colonisers. IIRC, Sardinia is another area thus
colonised.
