A new promo has appeared on White Wolfs site - any comments?
Victor Pelletier [Promo-20060417]
listed as (2006 Championship promo)
Cardtype: Vampire
Clan: Ventrue
Group: 4
Capacity: 5
Discipline: cel dom for PRE
Camarilla:
When Victor enters play, you may pay 1 pool to make him a primogen, 2
pool to make him Prince of Paris, or 3 pool to make him Ventrue
Justicar. If Victor's title would be contested, he immediately yields
instead of contesting.

Very strange.

April 17, 2006 is supposed to be the date he was released.
Has anyone seen this card? And what is a "Championship
Promo", I wonder. The term is unique on their promo list.

This is the oddest part of all. Promos are usually of limited, marginal,
or very specialized utility. Is there any reason anyone thinks this guy
wouldn't be a stud? 5 Disciplines of which 4 are in-clan for a 5-cap.
And optionally paying pool for a title, even if the title is slightly
more vulnerable than most, is only gravy.
Very strange. I'd think it was a late April Fool's joke except I can't
see them messing around with their website to bother with it.

Well, if there's one thing that the Ventrue need, it's to sure up this
"Law Firm" deck that they like to play so much, it is usually just so
vulnerable... I mean, throw out Arika, start dropping PTO and KRC while
you bleed for three at massive stealth and vote lock... Just so
wimpy...

(Assuming I understand this correctly...but I can only interpret from

Why are you giving out advantageous cards to ONLY to people who can
travel to extremely specific places at specific times? How totally
asinine.
Hell, why don't you just sell 'Game Win' cards, redeemable for game
wins at VEKN tournaments, through White Wolf's retail site?

Uh thats not ventrue lawfirm your talking about, thats obf ventrue.
Ventrue lawfirm uses only in-clan discplines, and Victor is awesome
vampire for that deck. He probably isn't going to see any play in obf
ventrue (as for example he is of incompatible group with Arika) >> Stay informed about: Victor Pelletier [Promo-20060417] |

I am rewarding the people who travel to extremely specific places at
specific times. Victor will become part of the regular tournament
support a year after his initial release.

Yea, and the "serfs" who can't make the trip - which is the vast majority
of the players - have to play against the people who've got the good,
rare card. Explain to me how *this* helps promote the game?!?
> Victor will become part of the regular tournament support a year after

That, at least, will be some scant mitigation. By then, of course, I take
it some other good, rare card will be distributed to the plane-hopping
nobility of the game.
We don't _need_ to do anything help out the card collections and decks
of those who travel to championship events. If you feel you must reward
that behavior, find a way that doesn't further upset the balance between
haves and have-nots. What's most needed in this game are more tools to
recruit and hold onto to new and marginal players.

Now Fred, as it seems highly likely that these cards will be available
as general promos within a year of release, just like all the promos
are, you'll likely be able to get some without much effort in the
furture. Just like all the other promos.
I currently have more Genia the Red Poets, Advanced Alan Soverigns, and
Spontaneous Powers than I know what to do with.

Scrye, "hot promos" section.
You, creating controversy and publicity.
Drawing just a little bit more attention to our Championship events.

I'd like the "nobility" to chime in on this.
Fred, people take time off work, save money, and in some cases put
relationships on the line (experience talking here) to travel and play
with some really fantastic people. I think it's rude to patronize these
people.

The next major set releasing this summer is going to have a Demo
Pre-release event. A major drive to gain new players.

Really? I can fix that.
Send me a direct email (carneggy at that gmail place), and I'd be happy

Sure, publicity. But in the end, I disagree with the notion that all
publicity is good publicity. In the long run, you can only sell cards
to players. And if players get disgusted by the card company maintaining
good, rare cards in the set of playable cards, they'll leave the game
and stop buying cards. Ultimately, the best thing you can give the
nobility are more opponents to play against on a day-by-day basis. Not
extra weapons to help them win yet more games.

*snrk* In Arizona, I _am_ the nobility. (More often the car-hopping sort.)
But what do I know, trying to help keep a couple of small playgroups
functioning as best I can? I'm sure my friends will be glad to hear about
another card they can't have.

I'm not sure what word you meant to use but "patronize" does not describe
anything I'm doing. As far as I can tell, merely being able to be present
and play a ton of great games against great players ought to be plenty
reward and incentive to people who are able to make the trip next October.
I don't any reason in the world you need to cause this sort of controversy
when plenty of incentive already exists.

Sure. That is very cool. I'm just saying this kind of a promo is
unnecessary and discourages the very people we need to recruit and
hold onto.

Damn hyperbole biting me in the ass again
I actually do know what to do with all the Alan Soverigns I have. But I
do have 3 or 4 of them. So as "hard to get promos", they were actually
not that hard to get. And I didn't pay for any of them. Just picked
them up for free at non national championship events.
