For face-to-face games, when we have one player not show up, we play "chaos
Italy." In this variant, everyone submits orders for Italy each turn, along
with their own orders. A die is roll just before orders are read to
determine who's orders are used. That person's orders for the season are
then read and they also get to do retreats and adjustments (you cant waive
builds). Repeat each turn. I've found that this is much better than a
neutral or "defensive" Italy variant, and surprisingly works really well.
You get some funny unusual positions, of course, but its par for the course.
Might work in email dip, not really sure.
