Having been part of a.g.e. for as long as I have, and considering the fact
that it's nearly ground to a halt as of late, I feel comfortable enough
saying that Vanguard is definitely worth a try. Some may well feel that it
incorporates just enough of the WoW design philosophy with regard to
questing to be successful without leaning too far toward shooting for mass
market appeal.
Diplomacy is pretty cool. I hope they put it to good use as the game
progresses.
I'm posting while at work, so no time for a more in-depth review - perhaps
later - but I wanted to mention it, anyway.
Pre-order access began on Friday, Jan. 26. Full launch is Tuesday, Jan. 30.
Hope to see some of you there!

Played the beta and the pre-release. This game is awesome even with the bugs
it currently has. Diplomacy is a very powerful tool especially if you get
involved with civic diplomacy. I spent 7 hours online today and didnt even
get my mace out, but what an enjoyable 7 hours. I don't know of any other
MMORPG that you can play this long without having to kill something.

No, it's a Sigil game. Sony is just the distirbutor/host.

Aye, I believe Sigil stated that SoE would market, publish and host -
nothing more.
Beyond that, I've always felt that unfixed bugs are just par for the course
with MMORPG's. It's all about progress and prioritization. From a business
standpoint, only so many resources can be dedicated to fixing bugs. As the
game progresses, new bugs will always be introduced into the mix. The total
number of bugs that exist at any one time will always be prioritized by
importance, not age. The length of time a particular bug has existed isn't
nearly as important as the level of negative impact it has on the game as a
whole.
Like it or not, it's the new content that keeps people paying to play.
Therefore, it only stands to reason that it's the new bugs that will often
get the most attention.

What burns me up about SOE isn't that they don't fix old bugs
but rather that they blithely introduce NEW bugs. Which they then don't
fix because they're old bugs after that I guess.
My current favorite example is "You cannot see your target".
Oh, right, it's standing next to me hitting me with a club but I can't
see it because we're on a hill and on Norrath hills make you blind.
Then there's the warping mobs bug. Or is that warping mobs BUGS?
Kite stonemight goblins over to the rocks by the spider caves. Watch them
magically poof back to their spawn point and return with a train. Note that
goblins can _always_ see their targets as you contemplate "Loading..."
And how many times will they apply a patch that breaks the guild lobby
door? I mean, really, pay someone 50 cents to click the thing and make sure
it works before you patch the production servers, really now...
<disclaimer>
I'm aware Sony can Do No Wrong and that by daring to complain
about minor imperfections I'm showing myself to be an ungrateful casual
player.

I have to say the one thing that has disappointed me about Vanguard are the
bugs. There are lots of them. None of them are show stoppers, but when
Sigil's CEO says this is a matter of course for MMORPG's I could retort
'What about Warcraft?'.
Warcraft came out with extremely few bugs - I personally didn't notice any
on day 1. Most of their initial patches were game-play tweaks rather than
bug fixes. It was the initial polish of WoW that I think hooked people.
Vanguard has me hooked because it is unique, but I wonder how many people
have turned away from it because they cannot see through the bugs? Releasing
games early is in my book a poor excuse.
