The core VBS1 package that was released works but the addons that were
also on nntp don't.

No, its not a myth. I have VBS1 and the game plus major addons are all
encrypted to your unique key. I'll be suprised if they have gotten it to
work.

Well, AA should be out about Xmas going off the latest info and
interviews from GC06 etc and as that uses the VBS2 engine, downloading
this is more just to have a look at the differences to OFP like the
animations, animals etc.

There's really not much in the VBS core so don't expect much fun gaming
with it. You sure as hell won't get any military secrets from it Smile

I've read that you can make it work as a OF addon.
A year ago I would've grabbed this, but with AA less than a year away,
is it ever worth it....?

True. It's next to useless as it comes with only a core island and none of the
maps that came with OFP. Plus you don't get many units to use either. I have
all of the addons except Artillery and it really is worth it if you are an OFP
nut!

I have absolutely no doubt that some of you inhere indeed are nutters with a
passion for OFP, especially since the pricetag for VBS1 is so outrageously
over the top Smile.

Just some questions, i know that VBS1 is used for military use in mission -
exercises and such, but do those missions (non classified and such) take
place on the internet and can you who bought it (wouldn't even call it a
game) participate in those missions or how does it work for you?, do all who
bought it play on a single big battlefield?

You can play on the Internet or on LAN. You can't join an on going session as
with OFP so they take a little more organising but once they are up and
running yes, you are all on a single battlefield. Fantastic fun and beats all
others out there hands down on everything except graphics. It's not all that
bad to be honest but it can't really compare to BF2 although it is close with
unit and vehicle detail but not other textures.

Supposing you were a card carrying paid up ofp player, who had acquired
the vbs1 core just for a quick look before buying AA. Where would one go
to get addon free missions, or even free addons to tinker with?
Purely a hypothetical question you understand......., anyone know?

I have VBS with all the official and unofficial addons. I think it is
highly unlikely that you will find any user made missions that only use
the core pack.

ALL the VBS missions I have are stuffed with official and unofficial
addons I have simply never seen any which only used the core pack and
nothing else other than the handful of introductory missions distributed
with the core pack itself.

Yeah, that's what I thought, there isn't much in the core is there.
Worth a look though. With this to use as a benchmark ArmA should be good.

I suspect that ArmA will make VBS1 redundant for civilian users.
