Oh man, you never want to do what I've done, which
is to ignore your computer for many months. You can
well imagine the email horror story I encountered, and
I think it took a couple of hours for the Norton to d/l and
install all the needed updates. Gah.
Wow dudes- so much to tell, and not a lot of energy
to tell it with. I'm off to a doctor appointment in an hour
or so, which seems to be my only social life except for
grocery shopping once a week. And some weeks I'm too
FUBAR'd to do it, so Ross goes it alone.
Looking at the dates on my incoming email, and noting
how far back my last appearance was in here, it looks as
if a full *7* months has elapsed since my last visit with
you all. *Shame* on me!
Now that I've found the "oomph" to boot up again, I'll
be back to catch up on your current news and stuff, as well
as tap out some long-overdue "thank-you" notes.
Spanner: I never did get that scarf in the mail, but rest
assured you'll have it for next winter.
BillZBubb: Dude, I gotta thank you properly in a written
note, but you gotta know those kumquats didn't last more
than 2 days. OMG they were the BEST!!!
ClayPidgeon: Apologies again for assuming you knew
about the cancer, and thank you for the call. You ARE my
little bro, ya know.
And to Fabrice: Many, many, MANY thanks for calling
me and raising my spirits! Getting to hear Justine in the
background is still a highlight of this past winter.
Well, gotta run, but I'll be back soon with a report on
whatever y'all want to hear about. I'm still fighting chronic
pneumonia, but I think my anemic issues are in the past-
I never knew just how wiped out you can get with low iron
levels. Felt a bit like being road pizza, I think. LOL
Back soon, I promise,

So Miracle... you got bored with World of Warcraft... and now you want to
come back. Hmmm
On the Justine front, she evolving really fast... I'll have to invest some
pesos on some ball and chain thingy to keep her where I drop her. You'll
find some pictures and videos on my webpage. You'll find Justine doing some
Spiderman, GI Joe, snorrrring, laughing,...

So now she's back, from outer space?
Welcome back! Glad to see you're feeling (marginally?) better.

Cute kid. Very goal oriented, I see in that GI Joe clip; she didn't give
up[1] until she had the toys, then expected them to play with her, or
something. As said, cute.
Be nice to her. One day, she'll pick your retirement home.

Thank you, Frank! It's very good to see you again.
I'm loathe to admit it, but after all this "down time" I've
had, I didn't get a single book read. Managed a few
magazines, and a hefty stack of medical leaflets, but
no books.
Shameful. Unless I can count the new polymer clay
book I bought on jewelry making.
Gah, I'm a sad blob of ignorance, I fear. I can't even
speak intelligently on the merits or perils of that new
MS OS I see advertised. What is it? "Vista"? Something
like that......

She is a real "tete en bois" literally "wooden head" = stubborn... almost
like a mule. When she decides to play with daddy's amplifier front buttons,
it's really hard to steal her focus from it.

Remember when XP first came out and we all decided to wait for a service
pack? Same applies here. Except that it's almost impossible to buy a new
home computer without Vista installed. That's how they get their hooks into
you.
It's a pretty OS, but I don't see significant new functionality. LUA will
be nice, but that's more an application requirement, and the apps mostly
haven't caught up with it, and so break easily and require that one disable
OS security to use them. (Gee, where do I remember that from?)
I got my mom a new eMachine with Vista Home Premium for her birthday (80 in
Febrary!) so I could set up WoW for her. Out of the box the video driver
was broken, at least for running WoW, so I had to upgrade that instantly,
and it's still not quite right. (Intel embedded video chip on the mobo.)
She does love the Mahjong that came with the Premium version of the OS. I
think that's the big distinguishing feature between "Basic" and "Premium":
inclusion of Mahjong. >> Stay informed about: Urk |

My next PC is a Mac. But then, I'm not the one paying for it. It pays to
be a Java developer, when your development environment is cross-platform.
I'm looking forward to it, for two reasons:
1) It's a FreeBSD system, iow a Unix system, but one that is usable, and
that just rocks.
2) The whole design philosophy for those little apps seems great: KISS,
coupled with high-design, well engineered UI's.
Oh, and it's a pretty OS and hardware, and has a 13.3" screen and size
to match. How cool is that?
With Apple's bootcamp and the (payware) Parallels I won't have to miss
Windows XP or Vista either. Fun fact: Running XP in Parallels takes
about 30% of one core while idle, whereas running Vista takes 100% of
one core and in the process prunes your future side of the family tree.

Note that you're not allowed to use the lower (home) levels of Vista in
virtualized environments:

Yup! I'm so glad I won't need to worry about it for a long time-
my Beast is sitting in the office still pristine and waiting for me
to flip back into prophead mode, and this laptop will last me a
very long time if I treat it right, so I'm hoping to avoid the
inevitable newest MS OS for a long while.

Have you seen those Mac commercials? One of the newest
has the pc being interrupted every sentence by asking "Cancel,
or Allow?". Oh hell no I ain't paying for that aggravation just yet!

I think that's my main bitch about laptops in general: that
imbedded video chip instead of a proper video card. That and
the nearly-impossible-to-read wee blue words and symbols
on the keys.

Okay, at 80 I'll cut her some slack about the Mahjong. LOL
At 54, I still have no clue how to send a text message from my
cell phone, and can't imagine using that teensy keypad to tap
out an email. <shudder>

I read the entire article, and am now more determined
than ever to avoid paying MS a penny more than I have to,
and will avoid Vista until it's physically impossible to do so.
What idiot would trust any MS app/proggie/os to deal
with spyware or adware?!?!?
I also gave myself a headache. Ow. But half the blame has
to go to the total chaos that ensued here when Jessica spotted
the pamphlet-toting Christian coming up the walk in the middle
of my reading.
Life has become easier in some respects: "You are tresspassing.
Leave now and I won't let the dog loose."
Funny how they don't linger any more to debate the issue......
