I guess not releasing on the 360 came back to bite Epic in the ass. 1
million SHIPMENTS, not sales, on the PC and the PS3 ... TOTAL.

I suppose that Epic now has proof that if they want to sell games, they
better release on the 360.

---- quote ----
"Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC and the PS3, have now shipped over a
million units total. While it may seem the PC market is slowing as
indicated by MPD sales for this title, that is not the case
internationally, where PC sales continues strong in a number of markets.

“As we expected our European PC sales of Unreal Tournament 3 are
outpacing North America and overall the title is turning out to a
success. Later this year, we are scheduled to launch the Xbox 360
version of Unreal Tournament 3 and expect it to perform equally well.”

I think the bigger problem is that UT3 is really just a tech demo
masquarading as a deathmatch game. The real value for UT3 will be in the
user mods, and later, commercial games that license the engine.

It IS due out later for the 360. However, the comedy in this whole thing
is that PS3 fans acted, for a long time, as though Unreal Tournament was
the most important title of this generation and that it being released
for the PS3 was going to turn the tide and make everyone want or beg for
a PS3. In addition, the fact that the PS3 could run MODs made the PS3
version superior to the eventual 360 one.

In the end, the MODs were a non-factor as was the game. It was barely
noticeable in sales and did nothing to move the PS3 as a console. All it
really did was confirm to Epic that developing for the PS3 either
exclusively or by priority would be a gigantic mistake.

Did you notice how they went deathly quiet once the game was released
and the reviews started coming in?

True and Epic, esp Mark Rein, had to come back to M$ with their tale
between their legs. Rein, as usual, was talking big stuff about UR3
and dissing GOW. Now that UR3 bombed, he is eating humble pie.

Well, I believe that this puts Epic in a very interesting position to
say the least. Some rumors have been speculating that there is a
possibility of Microsoft purchasing Epic. It makes sense though I
somehow doubt that any such thing will happen. However, if Epic does
indeed realize that Microsoft is the best salesman for its games
(through the 360 and Windows), then it can make an acquisition by
Microsoft seem natural (ie: if Microsoft is where Epic sells the most of
its stock, why should it not be a permanent part of Microsoft?).

However, if I was in Microsoft's position and was in the market to
purchase a company. I would make a speedy purchase of Capcom. If
Microsoft is truly worried about its place in the hearts of the japanese
gamers, securing Capcom would ensure that Microsoft would become the
first choice for games in both the east and the west. It would piss off
a lot of gamers, the same way Electronic Arts' hostile purchase of Take
Two is already pissing off gamers (such as myself, I am boycotting
Electronic Arts), but I think that a short-term hatred by gamers is
worth their long-term loyalty.

As a result, Microsoft should purchase Epic if they want knowledgeable
programmers capable of producing graphial powerhouse games whereas they
should purchase Capcom if they want to purchase powerhouse intellectual
properties that cater to all markets.

Either way, my original point is that Microsoft is convincing even the
harshest critics that it is the platform of choice for games regardless
of how shitty the hardware is.

I think they didn't get the memo that damn near every game comes with
deathmatch nowadays.

How is it ever a good thing if microsoft keeps wanting to buy all game
publishers. Wheres the independence going to be to make software not tied to
one console or way of thinking? Look what EA has done to the sports
franchises.
