Well, take my opinion for what it's worth, since I'm primarily
interested in single-player games. But -despite this- I loved the
original UT and managed to glean some satisfaction from the sequels.
But I found UT3 strangely unsatisfying.
Strangely, because Epic went to great lengths to shoehorn a
single-player campaign into the game, including ridiculous
rationalizations for all the multiplayer incongruities (like, why are
we running around picking up flags anyway?), presumably to satisfy
people like me. But in the end, the story falls flat, with bad pacing
and unlikable characters. So what we are left with is the gameplay,
and unfortunately UT3 doesn't hold a candle to the intense action of
its predecessors. None of the levels really have that spark of
originality and intenseness that made the first games so memorable.
The vehicles never feel like a natural fit in a game like this (all
the more so since the levels often railroad your vehicles through
narrow canyons rather than let you maximize their usefulness on open
plains). And the AI doesn't hold a candle to the wickedly human-like
'bots of previous Tournaments.
So, what's left? The graphics engine is capable, but never utilized to
its fullest (and there's far to much dependence on post-processing
effects), and the levels lack any sort of interactivity. The music is
the usual boring FPS tracks. And the general interface seems designed
to piss off PC gamers.
UT3, like many (reputedly) A-list titles these days, isn't a bad game;
it just fails to stand out and in the end is, at best, an average
game.
