I recently received a message from 'simMarket', espousing the delights of
Ultimate Terrain Europe. Does anyone have experience of this program? Might
it interfere with VFR Photographic Scenery for the UK, which I already use?
They are also offering a reduced-price package with 'Ground Environment'.
Does that live up to their description, and do you need both anyway?

Hey, David, I haven't had time to peruse the forums over at UT in the last
several months. Have there been any updates in the last 8 months or so to
UT-USA? It seems to me that the they have stalled on releasing updates
since UT-Europe and now UT-(somewhere in the southern hemisphere, perhaps
Australia?), given that those titles are money-makers and updates are not.

I had submitted several bugs to their bug tracker back in Dec 2005 (the
most notable being the elevated Colorado River near Blythe, Arizona) but
hadn't seen any of these addressed.

A bit discouraging, given the fact that I, too, really enjoy what UT-USA
has done to the FS world.

For compatibility, check the UT forum: there may be a sticky with the
information you need already there. If not, post a question: they're
very responsive there. Here's the URL:

Is it really as good as they say? I have UT USA and it is one of my
favorite add-ons. Once you get used to flying with naturally-shaped
shorelines and rivers, it's very hard to go back. I'm a big fan of
Ground Environment as well, though if forced to choose I would get UT
first.

Here are some screenshots:

Terrain mesh is FS Genesis (38m). Ground textures are Ground
Environment. Roads, lakes, and rivers are UT. Cloud textures are Flight
Environment, weather is ActiveSky. Aircraft is the DHC-2 Beaver
(Aerosoft).

I'm not aware of any recent patches, Peter. My sense is that Allen
Kriesman plans to go through UT Canada/Alaska and UT USA and bring them
up to UT Europe standards. The x factor is FSX. See
http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=17884&PN=1 for his
thinking on this topic a few weeks ago. I'm guessing that we'll see
these things happen in this order:

1. Port existing UT products to FSX.
2. Bring earlier UT products up to UTE standards and fix user-reported
problems.
3. Create a version 2.0 of UT for FSX.

But these are just my guesses, and they're not based on any insider
knowledge -- just what I read in the forum (and I don't read that
religiously).

UT is not perfect yet, but it is already great. Perfection on this
scale would have taken either more time (we would still not have a
product) or cost more money than I can afford to pay (UT would be
available now but cost $100). I'm happy with the compromises Kriesman
has made so far. The products are very, very good and they're
affordable. For UT USA, I expect we will see incremental improvement,
but the existing product is already excellent.

Will there be a UT South Pacific? I doubt it. Again, no insider
knowledge. But VOZ is dealing with Australia, and Christian Stock
already has a fantastic roads and water package for New Zealand.
Screenshots of that here:

I use UT USA, Alaska, Canada and Europe. They make a huge difference
and are well worth the money. I use VFR The Netherlands along side UT
Europe withou probs. Coupled with FSGenesis Mesh it makes for great
viewing out the window.

Thanks, David, for the speculation.

One follow-up question: What do you mean by "bring them up to UT Europe
standards?" I do not have UT-Europe, and having dabbled myself in lake and
shoreline scenery (NY Lakes, my contribution to the freeware world), I am
wondering what improvements, other than correcting mistakes, UT-Europe
offers?
