| Is this the most blatant piece of advertising ever?
What happened to the magazine, and actual article content?
I don't want a picture book. I want a decent hobby magazine, which White
Dwarf seems to be going further and further away from being.
What are the opinions' of others?

White Dwarf has been GW's advertising medium for many years.
Even the gaming features are aimed at you buying the latest product / launch
/re-issue. Look at the battle reports for instance, always races for which
they (purely by coincidence) have released models for.
No, sorry, this is not new, only sometimes it is more obvious. As someone
who is only missing 3 issues of WD from issue 1 ( anyone out there want to
sell issues 5,6,7, ???) I have seen the changes, and as I am still in the
hobby, even after all these years, I will continue to buy WD. There again,
perhaps I just daren't stop...? >> Stay informed about: UK White Dwarf 316 |

You also have to wonder how long the company will continue, it has
reduced the opening hours of its stores. Most open at 12noon now! I'm
unlikely to be out and about shopping after that time, so the last time
I visited one of their stores was middle of last year.
And I have also stopped buying the mag all the time, I found i was
spending just a few minutes looking at the pretty pictures then putting
it to one side, certainly because the prices of the models etc have put
me off expanding my units. I'm now looking for something else to play.

probably because mongoose has actual talented writers. when you pick up
some of their stuff, you WANT to read it. the current crop of GW games dev
authors and WD journalists have produced some truly headaching prose over
the past few years. which is a great pity, because a large part of what got
me into the hobby in the first place was the hugely evocative and
well-styled writing by guys like andy chambers and jervis johnson, both in
the gaming material and WD articles. the stuff in the latest codexes and
army books is bland and uninspiring by comparison (at least where it isn't
barely readable). perhaps, as someone to whom reading and writing are a
more important and engaging medium than film or audio, i have unreasonably
high standards, but still. *shrug* >> Stay informed about: UK White Dwarf 316 |

WD has always been a mix of catalog and hobby magazine. Recently the
company has taken a sharp downturn financially, and no longer pays for
articles.
Previous issues have run all the painting showcases (read: free) they
have, and now it seems like they have nothing left.
WD has had downturns in quality before. Jake Thornton's reign was
noticeable sub-par, but that's because he took over so quickly from the
previous editor.
But now they aren't really running any articles at all. They aren't
even bothering to run articles on how to assemble your new giant, or
even paint it. The last article had all of one article, on how to paint
camo on Tau tanks.
WD 316 is quickly becoming known as what is quite possibly the worst
issue ever.
Your best bet if you want good, recent WD material is to grab some
issues from the very early 290's to the very early 300's.

Of the two stores I go to, one never carried Starship Troopers, the other
dropped it recently. The store that didn't carry it is dropping Games
Workshop (they've carried GW stuff for something like 20+ years), though
they will continue to order stuff for customers if they specifically ask for
it (as I get a good discount through them, I'm likely to do this).

The sad thing is, I think that WAS GW's idea of subliminal.
How much money did they sink into making the damn things that they need to
advertise them that hard?

Not sure it's effective enough to warrant the points.
You might want to trawl the warhammer forum a bit for alternative ideas
before investing.
