I just started playing U7 using Exult and making all new notes. The only
thing i plan on using from previous play or the internet are maps (just so i
don't have to make them again).
I'm still in Trinsic, explored everywhere except Blacksmiths shop and have
talked to all but a few characters.
My question is... Should i be stealing everything not locked down or play it
without stealing anything? I do plan on helping myself to anything that
belonged to Christopher. Are there repercussions to stealing in U7 other
than getting caught?
TIA

I remember that now. Thanks. Guess i'll try it without stealing stuff and
see what happens. >> Stay informed about: U7 Question |

Do whatever you want

Excessive stealing may cause trusted party members to malfunction and
leave. This can be prevented or fixed, though you'll have to have
either a lot of money or 7-8th circle magic to repair them.
I found that by dropping the stolen items into followers' backpacks
seems to reduce their tendency to leave in disgust.
See here (don't read the entire page.. it may spoil it for you!):
http://www.it-he.org/ultima7.htm#consecration
If the worst comes to the worst, you can shoot the errant follower
dead with Death-Bolt (Level 7 spell), and then resurrect them (Level 8,
400gp or a trip to Lord British). After their resurrection, the
doubter will recant, and declare that you've "learned your lesson"
(a funny way to describe murder: still, we know what he means) and
re-join the party. (Maybe he really said "I've learned MY lesson?")
Again, on my web page:
http://www.it-he.org/ultima7.htm#thefirm
By the way, if you have sufficient CPU power, you might want to
consider using DOSBOX instead of Exult.
It runs the actual game, so your saves will be properly interchangable,
and it also has various scaling algorithms to improve the look at high
resolution. It doesn't have keypress, paperdoll or other extensions
though, obviously.

I just installed DOSBOX and it looks like I got it working ok. Will probably
play with speed settings a little. I had just left Trinsic using Exult, so
haven't lost a lot of game time. >> Stay informed about: U7 Question |

Yes.

It means I can show you something interesting, or I can go back to
my archived savegames from 1998.
There are also things which historically, Exult has not been able to
do. I haven't checked recently, I must add.
I just find the original game more fun. >> Stay informed about: U7 Question |

it
In U7BG:
- eating food off table IS stealing
- simply moving "not yours" items is stealing (single-click is not stealing
though).
- taking "not yours" items to Avatar's inventory IS stealing
- taking "not yours" items to companion's inventory IS NOT stealing,
ha-ha-ha!, and everybody except moral purists does this after this the
item is "yours" and you can put it to Avatar's inventory.
The fact of whether somebody sees you stealing or not so - is absolutely
irrelevant.
Also - items in Avatar's storeroom (NW tower of LB's castle, LB gives you
the key) are "yours". Items in Iolo's and Spark's house are too.
U7SI is another a bit. The trick with "let the companion do the stealing"
does not work there, but visibility takes role - you can steal provided no
characters see this.
>Are there repercussions to stealing in U7 other than getting caught?
First sign: companions start moral complains.
Second sign: they are leaving.
If there are guards around - hard fight with guards, getting caught, losing
most goodies.

Just drag-and-drop the "non-yours" item to Jaana's or Iolo's backpack - no
complains at all, all is normal.
Then press Esc to close inventory. Then open inventory again and move the
item to Avatar's backpack.

Yes, and this makes it sloooow.... hardly runned on P-III, while original U7
runned OK on 386.

"Being genuine" is the benefit in itself.

Smith the horse can give you a clue about that. Or at least he would,
if he were in Ultima VIII.

Believe me, Moscow, there is only one house that could even remotely
belong to Iolo. >> Stay informed about: U7 Question |
