This happened some time back, but it still smarts.

I had a great game going, except I hadn't seen a source of rPoison all game,
and all the speed rings were cursed. Then I found a greater vault with a new
amulet I was betting was trickery. I used _speed, and waded in. When I
could, I used teleport other to get several hounds at once, but I didn't have
enough mana to do every single one individually. Timehounds and Chaoshounds
and Gravityhounds, Oh My!

(1) a gravity hound breathes, slowing and shifting me

(2) into LOS of a Q that immediately summons a

(3) swamp wyrm that immediately breathes

That's a perfect illustration of how the shifting caused by gravity breath
is far far more dangerous than the damage or even the slowing. AFAIK it's
the only monster attack which does this (other than TELE_TO, which allows a
save), and is why gravity hounds have their deservedly nasty reputation.

Commiserations.

Ugh yeah, I've never been comboed to death in a round by them, but
gravity hounds are probably responsible for more than their fair share
of my near-death experiences. For me it usually involves getting
blinked into LOS of another pack of hounds, such as inertia or impact.
Time hounds and gravity hounds never quite get demoted from "dangerous"
to "simply annoying" like most of the other zephyrs.

Even worse than gravity hounds are NPP gravity traps. These hit before
the player gets a move. I've taken stairs to a level and been hit by
one before I get a move. Player is displaced, sleeping monsters are
awoken, and unavoidable instadeath is possible.

1) Nexus has a high resist available that completely neutralizes it. Gravity
has a low-grade saving throw.
2) teleport(200) is basically an unwanted escape. teleport(5) is a low-grade
Phase Door.
