I have a Series 1 (early model) with a lifetime service. I will be hooking
it back up tomorrow after the cable guy is done doing his thing, but having
been using a dual tuner DirecTIVO for the past two years, I know I am going
to miss the second tuner, not to mention the larger drive space (I keep lots
of kid movies on the DirecTIVO).
Does anyone know if TIVO is still offering the lifetime transfer to a series
2 (for a fee)? (Not really interested in the HD series 3). I figure I can
keep the series 1 as a manual recording device (and for the kids movies). I
really don't want to pay a monthly fee on a new box. I have definitely
gotten my money's worth on the series 1 lifetime - paid $249 (Some of which
I think was rebated, but that may have been for the original purchase price,
not the lifetime). I used it 2 years in Colorado, 3 years in England, and
my brother used it for a year or so in Illinois until he got a DirecTV DVR
(not TIVO though), and it's still going strong (fingers crossed).

Nope. S2's opportunity for Lifetime is done.

You're pretty much out of luck. Your best option would probably be to
keep the S1 active and add the S2 as an additional box. That'll cut your
monthly fee down considerably.

You don't need to transfer lifetime to get it on a S2. You can outright buy
it for $399 for about another week and a half. It seems that most people
think this offer is only for the Tivo HD or S3 but it's not. You can buy a
lifetime sub for ANY Tivo.

Where can this offer be found? It's not on the TIVO website, unless it's
well hidden.

Waiting on a reply from SquirrelGuy on how to get this $399 lifetime
subscription, so if it's available I will go with it. I checked to see if
I'm eligable for the MSD, but since my series 1 hasn't "phoned home" for
more than 180 days, right now it's saying I'm not. Once the Cable Guy gets
here and gets my VOIP phone up and running, I will let it call, and see if
my eligibility updates.

I don't see what SquirrelGuy is talking about, but it looks like
the TiVoHD+lifetime offer:
http://www3.tivo.com/tivo-promo/show.do?pg=/buytivo/hdgift.html
now says that it expires April 1st (never a good date for business
offers, IMO). I don't know about a way to get the lifetime giftcard
separately, but TiVo doesn't make it easy to track down the available
offers.
That page is a but quirky, BTW. The right pane graphic still says
that it expired January 7th, but all the footnote text says April
1, 2008.

I am pretty sure the update was NEVER available to a DirectTV Tivo only a
standard Series 2 Tivo. Glad to be wrong but I dont think I am.

You are correct, it is not and never has been available on DirecTV TIVO's.
I am talking about getting a stand-alone TIVO DT Series 2. After looking at
the options, I may be better off just going with the 3 year commitment ($99
for unit, $299 advance contract = $400) which allows for hardware upgrade 3
years from now, when HDTV will be pretty much standard fare, and I will want
a series 3 (or series 4) and keeping the lifetime on the series 1 for the
kids room. After the contract, if I don't care to upgrade to new HW, I can
start the MSD at whatever the current rate is.
Side note: Cable Guy has come and gone, Series 1 is currently downloading
guide data, and maybe a patch or two (Though I don't believe TIVO has
released any major SW upgrades for series 1 in quite some time). Now to
call DirecTV and give them the bad news

For what it's worth, I move and change providers a lot, so for me, going
with a dual tuner s2 that can take the signal off cable boxes/sat
receivers/etc and control em with an ir blaster (s3's wanted cablecards and
that would have locked me into one source), and getting a lfetime service
from ebay (there's 4 of em on there right now), worked out pretty well... If
you already have an s2dt as you said above, you may just want to look on
ebay for the lifetime service thing >> Stay informed about: Transfer lifetime to new TIVO (Upgraded) |

No, I currently have a series 1. The other was a DT DirecTV TIVO, for which
service was just disconnected. I will post the funny comments on that in
another post using the 'goodbye DirecTV' thread I started in
alt.dbs.directv.
For SquirelGuy,
Thanks for the link to TIVO lovers blog. Now you made it so I have to make
this decision in the next week to get the deal. I was hoping to take a
month and ponder it. From what I got from your post on TIVO lovers, I will
see this option during the ordering process? I didn't see it as I was
browsing through the TIVO site, but I may not have gotten far enough in the
process. I'm pretty sure I was logged in. It may have been due to the fact
that my Series 1 had gone inactive (180 days without phoning home). If I
don't see on the web page, is there a codeword or offer number to use when
calling?
I am in the process of doing guided setup now after figuring out how to
bypass the 800 setup number that insists on dialing '1' first. (VOIP phone
doesn't like the 1- in front of the area code). I was getting frustrated
with the 'failed loading series' error, but I seem to have gotten past it
now and am on the second call to get channel line up and guide data.
Well off to ponder spending $500 dollars to upgrade to a series 2...

Sorry, guess I should have trimmed the posts, rereaing, you had said you
were looking at the s2dt's, not that you actually had one... I called asking
a sales droid about an s3, and he told me about cable cards and being locked
into one provider, and about the s2dt's for $99 - 4 months free service and
free wireless USB to my home network, and I bought a lifetime basic thing
(on ebay, there are a few of them for about $429 or less).. Seemed like a
resonable stopgap no muss/no fuss way to just do it now, albeit not HD, but
hopefully works with all my other stuff now, and with the c inputs,
hopefully in the future >> Stay informed about: Transfer lifetime to new TIVO (Upgraded) |

If you have an existing TiVo account and it is active, you should see
it here: https://www3.tivo.com/store/plans.do
Note that you need to sign in to see the lifetime offered.
If you do sign in and don't see it, it could be because of the S1 not
having called in for so long. But you should still be eligible for
the $399 lifetime, so you could call to straighten that put.

I really think that's a waste of money - if you're going to spend
$500, get a TiVo HD and transfer the lifetime from the S1. Even if
you only used it for analog cable, it is still a better unit than the
S2DT. And you'd have the option of hooking up an antenna and
recording OTA ATSC HDTV for free - and the ability to stick in a
CableCARD should you ever want to go to digital cable, with or without
HD.
The TiVo HD is $299 from TiVo.com (less from elsewhere), and the
lifetime transfer is $199.
