The proliferation of GPS devices in this day and age suggests that
people do indeed find a numerical reference to locations quite handy.
It's a matter of your goal: do you want to enjoy scenery or do you
want to locate something? If you want to locate something then I'm
more than happy to give you a quick, easy to follow way to find it.
If you're "enjoying the scenery" then, sorry, not with my time. Find
another schmuck who has time to let you search your soul for the
deeper meaning of life while you find the local McDonalds.

As an aside, being a private pilot, even those pilots who love scenery
still talk in terms of coordinates and which sectional chart a
particular airport is located on. If I asked for the location of 50J
and someone told me to "it's off the Charleston coast by that big lake
- can't miss it" I'd back away very slowly.

Absolutely.
If addons were cheats, they wouldn't be allowed. They are, so ergo,
it's not cheating.

There are script calls you can put in a Macro for showing your
location. It's built into the game.. All the addons do is call the
game engine functions.

Addons are Blizzards way of surveying what people would like to see in
their UI. If an addon becomes almost a standard part of everyone's (or
a vast majority's) UI, then they add it to the game (like Scrolling
Combat Text, fast quest text, showing helm and cloak or not. None of
these were in the original game)

I've no objection at all if people don't want to run addons, but if
they ask for help I'll assume a basic facility.

It is also semi-annoying when people constantly ask for timers for
the different objectives in Alterac Valley, resulting in a flood
of reports when 5+ people link them in /bg chat.

Oh dear... ok, for the hard of thinking.

You: I'm looking for a pub.
Me: Sure, go down this road half a mile, turn left. it's on the
corner.

You don't need coordinares in real life for near things, because you
can see everything around you.

However, if you were to ask me me where is the best pub in Khazakstan,
I'd almost certainly NOT try to give you directions like I would to a
nearby pub. I'd probably give you the map coords. If you find it hard
to read a map, then i'd suggest you probably should stick to local
pubs.

I usually will give a quest a shot to see if I might be able to solo it.
If not I'll ask in /1 a few times to see if anyone else needs to do it. If
that fails then I'll usually just hold onto it until some guildies need it
or I finally get an answer in /1.

I don't think its not understanding, its not caring. In the olden days
it work, then the floodgates opened and the dross came pouring in.

Unless the change the laws so we can kill those kind of people i fear
its not going to change.

And a typical zone in WoW is only a couple of miles wide at maximum.

Go down this road about half a mile - you'll see an ogre encampment,
and the cave is in the hills to the south of it.

If I were familiar with a particular town in Kazakstan (and if I were
asking in WoW for a location in it's zone, you might expect me to be)
you could give me directions in the normal way.

Very few people in WoW are asking directions to an arbitrary spot in
the middle of a continent they've never been to.

Indeed, they are mostly interested in "how do I get to X" rather than
"where is X".

Not on my server. In Azeroth, where the quest directions will usually say
"go to X SE of Y", they still ask where stuff is, even if they're standing
right in the middle of Y.
