You do realize that MOST players have a coordinates addon right? It's
a rare oddity that I find someone who doesn't, for the simple reason
that it's not a cheat: it's an incredibly basic function that I'm
surprised Blizzard hasn't implemented themselves yet (though I'm sure
they will eventually - they've already got around to adding scrolling
combat text and even the damage meter for BG's). As such, most
players can communicate locations of items quite simply within 5
characters of information rather than typing a 3 paragraph step by
step on how to get there, only to be whispered 10 minutes later with
"I can't find it".

There's pretty much no way to "cheat" using LUA. Blizzard defines
very strictly what can and can't be done (afterall they CREATED the
WoW subset of the language specifically for user addons). Anything
that can be done within a LUA script addon is not considered cheating,
and if it is, Blizzard patches it out of existence.

Well, 'cheat' is too strong a word - using them is basically just
cheating yourself. I wouldn't have any objection if they became a
standard part of PvP, but there's no reason to enforce them in the PvE
world which exists precisely because exploring is fun.

I have never bothered installing one, and in my experience many if not
most don't - certainly I tend to hear people giving proper directions,
and I've often heard people saying they don't when somebody responds
with coordinates. (Though obviously it's not difficult to guess the
coordinates anyway, even without an addon.)

So bad.

I only use the server supplied by my ISP if I want to access binaries. When
I used it for regular ng participation, I wouldn't see some posts for hours,
would often have to subscribe/unsubscribe to be able to dl new messages,
etc. It was pretty unstable.

I started using news.individual.net back in the days when it was free, but
didn't even consider switching when they decided they had to charge for it.

Exploring is fun, but can be very frustrating.

I think the majority of the "most don't" are not aware of addons at all.
And people must be much nicer on your server than mine. It seems that there
are many players that take particular joy in mis-directing people, giving
bad advice (oh, that blue you found is worth 20s; I'll give you 50s for it).
I would use addons just because you can't always trust other players.

Same deal here, the ISP I was on when I first started using Usenet had an
awful newsserver that dropped half the posts, so when people recommended
news.individual net (or its old name, which I now forget!) I switched, and
just kept it through various ISP changes. Was never any doubt in my mind
that I'd pay to keep it when they started charging, because it's so
reliable.

Thanks. Right now I'm on Time Warner, Road Runner. I don't think I'm
having problems with dropped posts, but I'm going to check out
news.individual.net anyway.

They have, which is why you have the .binaries hierarchies. Usenet is one
of the most widely used warez propogation mediums out there, second only to
BT. *

Which is exactly why it's so odd that they still haven't made it a part of
the standard UI.

The problem with "proper directions" is that many people have not been
in the zone before or if they have, they haven't covered enough of it
to make "proper directions" any use to them.

I'm happy enough saying something like "It's NE of the Ogre encampment
that's beside the river bridge" but if they aren't savvy enough about
the zone, and say "er, where's that bridge?" I just give co-ords and
leave it at that. I usually just don't have the time to spend in
typing a dozen lines of instructions.

Pardon my ignorance here, exactly what is BT? I (if I wasn't such a moral,
law abiding citizen of the net) would use IRC for wares.

Depends what they're looking for. Like you say, if they haven't
already been over most of the zone, they might not have seen the
bridge you're talking about that. That's why I usually say something
more along the longs of top right corner of the map, middle of the
bottom, or Due west of someplace you know they pretty much have to
know about, like Honor Hold. Of course, if they're after the location
on some specific widget, that's something else, though I'd guess I'd
probably give similar directions and tell em to look around that area
for it.

It's a p2p program and a protocol called Bittorrent. It's main use
(or at least main intended use) isn't spreading warez, but it
has become quite popular protocol on those too. The biggest difference
to other p2p protocols is, I think, that BT doesn't index any files and
you need to find a tracker from somewhere else to get things you need.

F.ex. Blizzards downloader is a simple Bittorrent client and several
Linux distributions can be downloaded with BT.
