The ultimate law is that of the reader. Good newsreaders make it easy to
filter out rude people and their ill-formatted posts. >> Stay informed about: Top posting to any news group |

Actually I disagree. I find it better to top post. I have already read
the prior post, or can go back to it easily with one keystoke if I wish
to.
I find it extremely annoying when people bottom post on long messages
they are too lazy to snip. I scroll down past pages and pages of quoted
stuff i already know about, and then see a one line "I agree" message.

"Bottom posting" is a misnomer for the correct style of posting.
As for new users, naturally they are often ignorant of usenet
etiquette, but most are quick to learn and understand it.

What percentage is this alleged majority?
Or is that just a half-witted assertion with no foundation on your
part?

Click on the Options link in the subject bar at the top. You now have
the option to select "View as tree" or "Standard view" along with
"Proportional text" or "Fixed text".
Also, once you have set that, do not use the back button to go back to
the group as that will undo your changes.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

ipowerweb
The client I use at home (Mozilla Thunderbird) is fine. It's the host
that is questionable.
At work, because of various spam filters and Outlook Express problems
with multiple accounts, I use their web based email system. I also
use IE7 at work.
I haven't messed with the settings with their browser or with IE7, I
just use the defaults.
Some of the stuff that happens with their web browser:
-can't display really complex characters like quotations (") and (')
accents... <_< You would get stuff like "RichardR74-s"
-images often jumpled with text: http://www.firish.com/snip1.jpg
-'default' is that cursor is at top of message when you 'reply'; note
that message sent does not use standard characters like '<' to
indicate sent message but a faint vertical bar: http://www.firish.com/snip2.jpg
- if you try to add message at end of text, you cannot separate it
from the body of the text that his delineated with the vertical bar;
it becomes part of the vertical message. If you want to 'bottom
post', you have to copy and paste portions of the message you want to
the top, add the '<' in front of the lines, and then add your reply
after that.
- tech support sequence:
1. Wait for chat person for 45 minutes
2. Take 10 minutes to validate your account. Again.
3. Try to explain problem but end up answering meaningless questions
instead.
4. Blame the browser: "I guess, you are experiencing the browser
issue." and "I would also suggest you to check the e-mail using the
different computer which you are not using."
5. Fill out Customer Dissatisfaction Report
- downtime: at least once every two weeks, my mail server cannot be
accessed
- more tech support: mail sent out never arrives at destination. No
bounce back, no error message. Nothing. Granted, this 'could' be some
other ISP swallowing it. So I asked them if they could trace a
message to the non-receiving addresses. They said they were able to
send and receive email. I ask 'Did you send it to the email address I
was having the problem with?" Ten (!) minutes later: "I'm sorry, in
order to assist you, I am going to have to ask a member of our team
who specializes in this issue to take care of this for you." And
guess what... when I got an email later from them, they said they were
able to send and receive email.
Of course, that is only my experience. Your Mileage May Vary. >> Stay informed about: Top posting to any news group |

Yeh, that sounds good, thanks.
Unfortunately this thread had drifted off-topic a bit, and I really ws
referrering only to email messages (where top-posting/bottom-posting
is also an issue).
But your advice on the newsreader looks good, thanks again. >> Stay informed about: Top posting to any news group |

Similarly annoying:
Noob: Where is the Temple of Awesomeness?
Me: 45,23
Noob: I don't have the coordinates thing. Can you show me?

If you're going to ask for directions to a specific location in a

I use Astraweb when at home, but I (and I'd assume many) can't use a
real newsreader here at work because all access is delegated through a
proxy server. Essentially, all we have is web connections to the
outside Internet.
