It's nothing special now (except maybe the AI), but For its time Su-27
Flanker was nothing short of revolutionary. The detailed models,
excellent flight model (all things considered) and tough, uncompromising
gameplay made it a real experience... a bit too realistic perhaps, in
terms of difficulty.
That sim taught me to love the aircraft, and all these years later I'm
still a Flankoholic. In fact the main reason I've got so cheesed off with
Eagle Dynamics is their refusal to add the advanced flight model in
Flaming Cliffs to the only aircraft worth adding it to!
We don't need no steenking helicopta... we need a real kobra capability!

Thank you for posting your top 10. It seems we're the only two who get
the OPs point of the thread. The other guys seem to want to tell me what I
games I should like rather than naming their own top 10.

Great sim. This and Janes F-15 were great. It's too bad Janes Combat
Simulations went under. They made some of the best aircraft simulations out
there they also made a great submarine simulation. 688 Attack Sub was good.

I got this game and it's addons and played it a litte while. I thnk I'll
give it another go. I also remember Janes WWII Fighters. That game was very
fun online. Some others out there were F-22 Air Dominance Fighter and Total
Air War.

I'll bite.
Not in any order, or saying they're better than the later ones, but by
how much I played them at the time:
Battle of Britain; Their Finest Hour
SWOTL
Red Baron / Red Baron II /Red Baron II 3D
Pacific Air War
EAW
WW2 Fighters
I have others including many of those previously mentioned, but I never

Another in this series from Lucasarts was Battlehawks 1942. All these
games were great fun.

I suppose I'd have to put that first as well, if I was being honest.
Although it was Tornado which persuaded me to buy a PC, if someone in the
house I shared hadn't had a (very basic) PC which ran F117 I probably
wouldn't have got the flight sim bug.
Having said that, I'd already wasted months of my life playing Elite on
the BBC Micro and Chocs Away & Mig-29 on the Acorn Archimedes, so I'd
probably have succumbed at some point!

However if you can put up with slightly old graphics B172 is probably the
only sim I could still play today. I could play F4 Allied Force but Ive
played F4 to absolute boredom. EECH2 is worth a look for quite a good helo
sim and SH4 is a reasonable sub sim. But if you are looking for up to date
graphics, dynamic campaigns and atmosphere there is practically nothing
around worth playing that is anywhere near the past quality of the likes of

Yea you have a lot of sims that have great graphics and super duper
flight models but little playability. Nothing that would make me come back
like the older sims did. I liked the game Megafortress as it did a pretty
good job of simulating a B-52 even though it was a fictional version.
EF-2000 and the F-22 games were great for campaigns. There was another game
F-16 Combat Pilot that had a dynamic campaign and you could actually send
other squadrons to attack other targets while you did your missions. The
lighting during night flynig in F-16 Combat Pilot was great. Way ahead of
it's time. You could actually attack tank formations and if you missed some,
it effected the campaign.You actually had to go finish them off before they
moved in on your forces. But when you got back to base, you might have a
shortage of a particular type of Maverick missile. So you had to make do.
Once you finished a campaign it made you feel like you actually accomplished
something.
