Like Xymmie, I thought "toon" was the accepted title in this game.
When the person who asked me to try this game sent me e-mails
describing it, he always used the term "toon", so I just thought it
was the accepted nomenclature specific to WoW.
Anyway, the word I can't stand is "alt". I devote a lot of time, care
and effort into each one of my characters, and "alt", to me, makes
them sound trivial, dismissive and emotionally diminutive - "he's just
an alt". I know how silly that sounds. But my characters are
"characters", not "toons", and most certainly not "alts".

Yeah I can follow you on alt, though i think that some characters may be
worthy of the label alt - if i have a level 1-2, who has just be run to
the bank and is simply receiving stuff via the mail and put it on the
auction house, its not really much more than an alt.
But the others who have seen battle are clearly not just an alt >> Stay informed about: Toon / Characters? |

The term "alt" really has nothing to do with feelings, emotions, etc.,
about your character.
It's more often used in guilds that need to know which of your chars
is the one you will be using during instance runs and that will
be advancing with gear progression. The rest are just alternates.
Most high-end guilds don't really let you play multiple characters
since you'll end up having mediocre gear on all of them. They
prefer you to have a "main" that progresses quickly with gear,
and then you have "alternates" that are more for casual fun play.

Good ol' text rpgs. I'm not even that old (25) but I remember them
well. Back around that same time I was playing "Legend of the Red
Dragon", but on local BBS's instead of Telnet. BBS's were really cool
because it was mostly all local people. Most of them only had a
single phone line so there was no "live" multiplayer, but still fun to
fight the other players, even if they were offline .

Actually the MUD I co-ran had a huge local contingent,
because locals could get dialup to the university to
a computer that had access. It was kind of wierd
to actually have local parties and see these people
in real life.
The MUD I ran was based on LPMUD, not Abermud or Diku
(which had a more direct lineage with Everquest). It
was more puzzle and text adventure oriented in many
ways, and a lot easier to customize and create new
areas for. So there was a lot of experimentation
with ideas and content and features. We definately
work hard to make something that was more than "go
kill stuff, get loot, sell loot and heal, repeat" style.
Some of the ideas are still around, though many were
probably re-invented instead of being direct
descendents.

I totally agree with the grandparent. The whole main/alt concept is a
particular mindset that isn't universally applicable. Not everyone
plays that way. Personally I object to the assumption that one of my
toons is somehow special to me compared to the (many) others. I have
multiple characters, pure and simple. At any one time there will
usually be a smallish number that I'm playing to the broad exclusion
of the others, but which those will be in a month or two is totally
unpredictable.
As to whether they're toons or characters, though - I have no strong
opinion, and use the two interchangably. If push came to shove I'd
have to say that "character" to me suggests rather more
differentiation between individuals (excluding gear) than Warcraft
permits. Strip off their gear, and one fire mage is pretty much like
another, for example. "Toons" is probably a better term on that
basis. Plus it's shorter to say and type, of course.

That's a better explanation than what I wrote. I also object to the
notion that one of my characters is more special to me. But I'm an
editor; I read entirely waaaay too much into words.
I'm not sure, but I think you were replying to me. As I was born in
the 70s, I'm not quite a grandparent yet. And as I don't have
children, I'm really not quite a grandparent yet.
