Nah. Maybe if WoW's graphics tried to be realistic, you'd have a
point, but they're totally cartoons! ;p

They didn't have to play it to get the lingo. As they games
evolved, the lingo went with them, and new players picked
it up along the way. There were several games in between
MUD-1 and WoW. I think Everquest picked up quite a
lot from Abermud, which is a direct descendent of MUD,
and WoW has copied a lot of slang from EQ.

Like Xymmie, I thought "toon" was the accepted title in this game.
When the person who asked me to try this game sent me e-mails
describing it, he always used the term "toon", so I just thought it
was the accepted nomenclature specific to WoW.
Anyway, the word I can't stand is "alt". I devote a lot of time, care
and effort into each one of my characters, and "alt", to me, makes
them sound trivial, dismissive and emotionally diminutive - "he's just
an alt". I know how silly that sounds. But my characters are
"characters", not "toons", and most certainly not "alts".

Probably showing my age here, but I was playing Vincent's Hollow via
telnet in '91. Back then the address was (I think) mud.iastate.edu
Now it has it's own domain at www.vhdev.com
I remember thinking that it was amazing, like playing "Zork" (remember
that one?) with a bunch of people at the same time. Had a program that
mapped macros to the function keys... about the only one I remember (and
the syntax may be way off):
cast volcano
get stone
get stone
get stone
get stone

Oops... hit send before I was ready. Anyway, a bunch more "get stone",
then a bunch of "crush stone". Casting volcano caused you to "hear a
distant rumbling", at which point flaming stones would begin to fall
from the sky (no damage). You picked up the stones and crushed them for
magic/spell points.
I do remember that I also had macros that would take me from one point
to another quickly.

The really confusing part for me was that when I was just getting into
programming, MOBs were 'Movable Object Blocks' which basically means the
same thing

I have no problem with the term "alt". From what you've said, it sounds
as though you have multiple "mains" (though "common sense" would dictate
that there can be only one main). Many players have characters that
stay in a big city to use as a bank/auction house character, who never
progresses past level 1 and never leaves that city. Or, like me, some
have low-level characters that they only play when they get frustrated
with some quest or other goal that is giving problems. Those characters
truly are "alts".
