I had problems with "mob" as well. I used to play City of Heroes,
where the creatures come in mobs of 6-12 individuals and tanks gather
up enough enemies that they can't see out from under the pile. When I
heard WoW players claiming they could handle 4-5 mobs at a time, I was
assuming they were talking about a few dozen monsters at a time, so
drawing a little more aggro would be no big thing, right? (Fortunately
we worked this out I wiped out my first team.)

Truthfully, I called mine "toons" for awhile because that's what I thought
the accepted term/jargon for them was.* Then I found out (on this ng) that
some people really ***hate*** that term, and I now refer to them as alts.
*I was frequently, at my beginning, having to look up the commonly tossed
around Warcraft shortspeak: mobs, DoT, DPS, AoE, STV, DM, PuG, etc.

Damage Over Time - basically a spell that causes damage over a set amount
of time, like priest's shadow word pain, warlock's corruption, curse of
agony etc. Also HoT = Heal over Time, like a priest's renew.
>Dead Mines
Or Dire Maul.
>And also dungeons: Scarlet Monastery, RazorFen Down, RazorFen Krail?
Yup, almost all instances have been turned into acronyms, I'll list the
ones I can think of that are commonly used:
Azeroth Instances:
RFC = Ragefire Chasm
DM or VC = Deadmines (VanCleef)
WC = Wailing Caverns
RFK = Razorfen Kraul
RFD = Razorfen Downs
SM = Scarlet Monastery
ZF = Zul'Farrak
ST = Sunken Temple (The Temple of Atal'Hakkar, to give it its full name)
BRD = Blackrock Depths
DM = Dire Maul
LBRS = Lower Blackrock Spire
UBRS = Upper Blackrock Spire
ZG = Zul'Gurub
MC = Molten Core
BWL = Blackwing Lair
AQ = Ahn'Qiraj (usually referred to as AQ20 or AQ40, as there are two
instances, one for 20 people and one for 40)
Outlands instances (separated by group):
HFC = Hellfire Citadel
BF = Blood Furnace
SH = Shattered Halls
(Never seen acronyms used for Ramparts or Magtheridon's lair, that's not to
say they aren't used though, just not on my server)
CFR = Coilfang Reservoir
SP = Slave Pen
UB = Underbog
SV = Steamvault
SSC = Serpentshrine Cavern
Auch = Auchindoun
MT = Mana Tombs
SL = Shadow Labyrinth
(Don't usually see acronyms for Auchenai Crypts or Sethekk Halls, people
usually just call them Crypts or Sethekk)
TK = Tempest Keep
Mech = Mechanar
Bot = Botanica
Arca = Arcatraz
(The Raid instance called The Eye usually just gets referred to as TK)
CoT = Caverns of Time (yeah ok not in Outland but it's over lvl 60 )
OHB = Old Hillsbrad
BM = Black Morass
KZ = Karazhan, also referred to as Kara.

EU-Draenor:
Balgair - Human Rogue (lvl 70)
Naomh - Draenei Priest (lvl 70)
Sealgair - Dwarf Hunter (lvl 70)
Sagart - Undead Priest (lvl 60)
Rosad - Human Warlock (lvl 55)

Context dependent. Had someone on one server in
Westfall get really upset about this. Someone
asked for groups for "DM" and this person would
*not* accept that in Westfall "DM" referred to
Deadmines. Kept complaining that they were too
low level for Dire Maul, and that they were idiots
for not using the same abbreviations he did, etc.
I tend to just spell things about fully, and
say Deadmines, or Ragefire Chasm, or whatnot.
I find it amusing that this often confuses people
who never bothered learning the real names of
places.
> SM = Scarlet Monastery
Would be nice if this had abbreviations for the individual
four wings.

I hear people say "ramps" sometimes, which confused
me at first until I figured it out.

Um, hate to correct you on something you say you've been correcting
others about, but that's backwards LOL. Everyone fighting it has
threat (it's why it's call a threat meter, and why spells like
Counterspell say "This spell generates a high amount of threat.".).
Aggro is the focus of the mob, and it truly is aggro that you don't
want to steal from the tank.

It's what they were called on the first MUDs. "Mob"
was a "mobile object", or "mobile" for short. Anything
alive that wasn't a player. The term just sort of
stuck around in later multi player games.

It's just MMO terminology. I don't much like "mob" because to me a mob
with a group of creatures, but I still say it. I'm sure it's dated,
just like "proc" is. One thing I correct people on a lot is the
difference between "aggro" and "threat." People always say "Don't

Some from Guild Wars (e.g. PuG, AoE), others from a month on WOW (e.g., DM,
STV, SM and more recently noticing RFD, RFK, BRD and just this morning AQ)
and others from websites about WOW (e.g., DPS, mobs). I haven't seen DoT.
