When minimizing FS9, or switching between windowed and non-windowed
view, freezes were not unknown. I found that minimizing (with the
Windows key) usually was pretty clean, and sometimes if things did
freeze I could go into display settings, set antialiasing on, go back
to my flight, and all would be well again -- after which point I could
set AA off again.
None of this works with FSX. I am starting to dread switching out of
it (say, because I forgot to turn on TrackIR), because it usually
means restarting the flight if not the sim. Sometimes escape then
"continue with flight" works, but not reliably.

Why not do what I do, and setup a profile in FSAutostart or another similar
program. You can set it up to start any number of programs before it
launches the main application. For example, I can set it to shut down any
unnecessary programs to free up resources, then once it's done that, it will
fire up TrackIR, Active Sky, and Fraps, then finally the Sim. It only adds
maybe 30 seconds total to the overall start up time, which is less than what
you'd waste if you had to reboot from a frozen state.

I see it all the time on the laptop. Pain in the rear. I'm limited to
what drivers will install on the laptop without major hacks thanks to
Dell and Nvidia.

I would get a problem quite often when changing from full screen to
windowed and back again in FS9 were the program freezes and has to be
forced to close.

Only real way is to wait a very long time for FSX to catch up or run
it in windowed mode. I run multimonitor so I use windowed mode and
there's zero problems going in and out of FSX.

FS9 shouldn't be freezing at all. Sometimes I switch tasks constantly, and
I've rarely had any problems with FS9 doing it.

I don't encounter it with FS9; I don't use FSX. It might be a driver issue or
something if you're having a lot of trouble with it.

Do you mean after you minimise you can't get it back? I use Alt-Tab.
Right-clicking doesn't give me a restore or maximise option.

This one from Owen Miller is the one that ended up working best for
me:
"Seems as though you must always start FSX in windowed mode. To do
that you have to exit FS in the windowed mode. It will start up in the
next session in whichever mode you last exited, be it windowed or full
screen.
"Doing it this way I have been able to switch between applications
realiably. I have exited in full sreen then reloaded FX and of course
it came up in full screen. Even after switching to windowed I could
not switch applications and return to FS. I had to be in windowed
mode, exit FS, then restart (comes up windowed) before I could switch
apps.
"If you start in windowed I've found that I could switch apps even
with FS in full screen. It's kinda scary because it acts like its
going to hang up. Works for me anyway. Hope this helps."

I'm entering this conversation late but if we're talking about the FSX task
switch bug, I've found alt+tab to FSX, then hitting the ESC key works.
A window is forced up with the "Exit Flight Sim" button. If you select
"no" then the Sim comes back up in a second or two.
