I had 53 tin ore, and 97 skill, smelting bronze had gone green but I thought
it might get me close to 125 for iron. I smelted them all to bronze and
the stupid thing didn't give me one skill point! Mining tin is yellow for
me now but gives skill ups, is this the only way to 125? (other than silver
which you cant get much of)

Yep once copper gone grey you wont get skill up from smelting anything,
only mining. Oh, and mining tin will go green long before you reach
125. It a right old grind to get your mining skill to 125.

One thing to do, if you are alliance and are about level 21ish is go to
the spider cave in the far south of the Wetlands, to the west of the
road. There is Incendicate in there to mine as well as tin, occassional
silver and a couple chests that I've gotten a few blues out of from time
to time. But the spiders are thick and respawn fast. It's usually pretty
easy though to skill up to 125 and you can get to about 135 or more on
the Incendicite.

Ooh, useful - I'll do that on my hunter when he's levelled up a bit further

I got one skillup from smelting about 20 bronze when it was green, but it's
certainly not a reliable source of skillups by any means. Finding tin is a
right pain too - my lvl 16 alliance hunter has never seen a tin vein, while
my lvl 22 horde priest only rarely finds them (swimming round the Lushwater
oasis seems the best source so far!) Reaching 125 looks like taking a long
time Sad

Tanaris, run along the southern edge, and the bug caves.

Easiest place is Charred Vale... the hordies have it handed to them,
mithril guarded by piddly lvl 28 mobs, and a camp/FP is right next to
it. Another good place for mid-levels is southern Arathi, south of the
Keep and in the water by the sunken ships... but level 38-40 buzzards
and naga guard it all. Once you get to level 40+ zones it becomes
pretty common.

Yes smelting is not the greatest way to skill up. There is the ore in
wetlands, and rethburn ore, but I don't remember where that is. Just
keep tapping tin viens till your done. Silver is a rare spawn of a tin
vein so if your frequenting areas with tin, you will find the occasional
silver.

Redridge, has the best tin if you can deal with the caves.
Deadmines is also good for tin, but if you can solo that to mine your
not doing to bad.

Auberdine has great mining along the mountian ridge, just go east from
the town till you hit the mountain then head south. Copper to start with
tin further down. Copper sells for 1 gold for a stack of 20 give or take
so it's not a waste of time.

Stonetalon is nice to, the area around the alliance camp has copper and
tin, then the charred vale has iron and mithril.

If your impatient to skill up, the second you get gold you can buy the
ore and smelt that for points, but it's only about 10.

If you can afford the mining enchant to gloves +5 it tends to push the
red into orange just when your getting frustrated with the process

rethburn is in Redridge - I just found it and mined a bunch - but I don't
know what to do with it... any ideas?

Also, when you're at the level of mining tin, there is a quest starting in
Menethil that asks you to mine incendiary ore... it's in a cave near algoz
(sp?) gate. You can continue to mine it and skill up, even without the
quest - but you may as well get the extra xp along the way.

My problem is one step past you. I've maxed out on tin - so, where do I go
to mine next? I'm level 30 gnome - can I handle mining in Charred Vale?

I'm in the same position with my 23 Tauren hunter. There's tin all
over The Barrens though. Most of the oases have some at the bottom,
especially the one near Wailing Caverns. The mountain above WC has
some veins. The dwarf minesite and piggie camps are all rich with tin
as well.
