Hey guys,

Last Saturday was a pre-release tournament here in Manila. I wasn't
there coz NO ONE TOLD ME!!! Sad
Anyway, I checked some weblinks about the new expansion Time Spiral.
What do you guys think about the new cards? I read that they revived
many old rules and even old creatures. I checked the cards abilities
but I can't make out any nice strategies. Even the new/old abilities
like Flank, Split Second etc don't make much sense to me! I'm a new old
player and I am not familiar with these abilities. If anyone here is
familiar with the upcoming expansion and its abilities please enlighten
me and maybe some other newbies here! Smile

Hi again Zoe,

That Split Second ability sounds awesome. I will look into that! Smile

Check the rules primer here:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=magic/rules/tsp

Check up on the recent articles and look out for more stuff coming out
in the next week.

As for the abilities you mention:

Flanking is obviously an offensive advantage. Creatures with only 1
toughness will die immediately when they block a creature with
flanking. It makes it difficult to gang up on a creature with
flanking, too, as the same penalty applies for each blocker.

Split Second is an advantage against control or recovery strategies.
It stops the opponent from responding with spells or abilities that
could interfere with what you're trying to achieve. Often times you
find that your spells can only force tempo rather than taking their
full effect; split second makes sure that the spell isn't
circumvented with spells or activated abilities.

I'm sure more seasoned strategists will have more to say on the matter.

In _effect_ (though not truly), it's like the spell says "No responses to
me are allowed by anyone thanks, I'll resolve before you know it". In
actuality players can still get mana in response, or take special actions
that are legal at that time - turning a face-down creature face-up, ending
the effects of certain special actions, but NOT playing a land, since the
stack would have to be empty for that. But no spells or activated nonmana
abilities can respond to a split-second spell.
