I very rarely ask mages for water, though when I do I usually only get 20
water. Usually I ask higher levels so they can make 20 in a go. Anyway
today I asked a level 40 for some water in a friendly way, not just 'water
plz' he gave me 20 then I asked any more, so he made another 20. Took a few
seconds and his mana went down to about 90% whilst idling in SW. I guess im
just ranting as usually whenever I see a mana class I throw them at least 60
water without them even asking sometimes. If someone asks especially I'll
give them up to 100, I generally carry about 60-80 on me and give them my
stock and just create a load more and evocate. If I had just been given a
new water making rank and could only make 2 at a time, I would generally
give them 20 from the previous rank, unless they asked specifically. I'm
not a high level mage and don't get asked for water much, I'm sure other
people have different opinions about this. >> Stay informed about: Tight mages |

My opinion is that it is poor form to complain when someone doesnt *give*
you something. >> Stay informed about: Tight mages |

Am I understanding this correctly--you asked a total stranger to give you
something, he gave it to you, and you're complaining because he didn't
give you more?

Here's the thing. I hate making water. I never carry around more than
one stack, its personal use. If people in my guild ask for water, I
will make them 40 - 60. Usually 40.
The worst thing, is when level <54 ask for water. It means I need to
open up my spell book and find that damned water spell. Now, if I do
give you water all I expect is you to be happy and thank me. Not ask
for more.
With only 16 slot bags, carrying around a FR set, pots, keys, reagents,
trinkets, wizard oil, ore and bandages. I only have a few spare
inventory spaces left... I don't have enough to make you 7 stacks - I
barely have enough to keep me going. So quit whinging and buy your own
water or take what you're given. >> Stay informed about: Tight mages |

It's just the same as any other free clickity-click
conjuration/tradeskill that people have. Should rogues be required to
open your lockboxes for free since it only requires a click into a trade
window? How about enchanters, if you provide all the mats? Or asking
an axesmith to craft your arcanite reaper, you've got the mats, so it
"should" be free? Or arcanite transmutes? They have a 2-day cooldown,
but hey, it's just a click for them right? Charging 5g means they're a
jerk? How about mooncloth?
Thing is, it's all kind of a hassle to deal with pushy strangers wanting
stuff, and it also takes a great deal of effort to level up to get the
higher water quality, or arcanite reaper plans, or transmute recipes,
etc, so let the market decide. You can overcome my annoyance at making
a bunch of water by offering 10s for several stacks, or just asking very
nicely and having a personality more like a flower bush than a dog's
butt, or else you can just shove it. Buyers and sellers, supply and
demand, same old same old, pay up buddy. >> Stay informed about: Tight mages |

My 60 priest will take what is given and say thanks! I may "wish" for more,
but I'm grateful for any help at all. Especially in a raid format where
every priest, lock, hunter and pally are bugging the poor mage for a drink.

If I can make a high number I'll make 40, if it's only a few at a time 20,
as it's a pain to have to stand there clicking that button, especially when
people never pay for it. I've not been asked often yet, but no doubt as I
get higher up the levels I'll be asked more... no doubt if I get fed up
enough I'll create some macro to reply something like "That'll be 1g
please"

the only time i ask for water is when i'm in an instance and even then,
i'll whisper the mage and ask nicely.
to actually expect a complete stranger to faff and fart about for you for
your convenience, not his, is a bit of a cheek in my opinion. >> Stay informed about: Tight mages |

I'm a level 60 mage and if you asked me and had that kind of attitude after
I conjured a stack of 20 water for you, you would get told off pretty good.
If I'm hanging around IF (which I'm a 60, I do that a lot) and a stranger
comes up to me asking for water/food I have to stop what I'm doing
(Tailoring, AH, AH scanning, etc) to conjure it. Kind of a hassle when this
happens at least half a dozen times a day. I never expect to get paid. All
though I get tipped once in a while, which is nice and I apreciate it. I
never ask for it. Portals, I will charge 1g. I keep runes in my bag and
having to run back to the vendor to get one friggin rune is a pain in the
butt. I don't do portals for free.
Anyways... your post... a little... rude.... You give out lots, great. Good
for you! But the rest of us have things to do. We don't have time to conjure
hundreds of water and food every day. We want to PLAY the game, not be a
vendor. >> Stay informed about: Tight mages |

First off, I virtually never ask any mages for water. Second this was a
level 40 mage so he hardly had a ton of fire resistance in his bags etc.
Third I normally tip for opening lockboxes, and would for water if they gave
me more than 20, if I knew I was just going to get 20 I wouldn't of bothered
asking. Fouth opening your spellbook is hardly an inconvience, I do it all
the time on my priest to buff lower levels with the highest pw:f. Fifth I
didn't complain to him when I only got 20, I said 'any more' which I admit
isn't nicest way to ask for more but I was on the spot, if he didn't make
anymore I wouldn't of bugged him again and I did thank him. Sixth of course
I know not all 'button presses' are free, I charge 4g for transmutes, for
some button presses theres a norm of it being free or giving tips. Anything
involving a profession I don't expect to be free. Seventh I could of just
logged onto my mage and made them myself for my alt, but then I would need
someone to hold them, which as everyones so 'busy' and unhelpful they don't
respond, I tried this *once*, I guess the ppl where ignoring me or afk, I
tried to strike up a conversation not just ask them on the spot. Eighth I
was hardly pushy, I asked them in /say by saying hi first to see if they
respond, I'm not talking about arcanite reaper plans they you have to pay
250g for or high quality water.
Too many ppl in the game and on this newsgroup just seem unhelpful, they
might as well be playing offline, it is a mmo, if you don't want ppl bugging
you go play Morrowind. Generally you can't rely on people for anything so I
do it myself. FWIW I grinded low level water elementals for 100 water
anyway, which I normally use, its just that day I decided to stay on for a
long time so thought it might be nice to not use my own water. Don't worry
I won't be asking for water anymore, "Ahh but I never wanted to give you
water in the first place so good riddance" there I saved you a post. Feel
free to pick apart this post and write your smarmy superior comments I won't
bother looking at it. >> Stay informed about: Tight mages |

Yeah, it's easy to see why people become "unhelpful." After running into a
few people who seem to think they're entitled to your time and resources,
you feel less and less inclined to dole out kindness to strangers.
I think it's the same mentality that goes up to doctors or IT guys at
social events and tries to wrangle free advice out of them about their
problem. Pretty soon anyone with a valuable skill learns not to give it
away for free, because all he'll get back is more moochers glomming on to
him at social events.

When I'm playing my priest or 'lock, I go *buy* my own water... though when
partying with a mage they usually just give me some - unasked. When playing
my mage (lowbie), I'll give water to any mana user that I'm partied with,
but I'll only give one stack to others who ask for it.
On a "sort-of" related note, I was checking my Rogue's mail in IF the other
day, when a Mage opened trade (and closed my mail window in doing so) and
dropped a Thorium lockbox in the 'not to be traded box'. I sat there looking
at it for about half a minute and the mage tried to sweeten the deal by
putting up a couple of stacks of conjured food (real useful, since I was
logging off after attending to my mail, and as we all know, conjured food
goes 'poof' after 15 mins of being logged off). I just cancelled the trade
and logged off.
Here's the thing. If I'm at a bit of a loose end, I'll hang out in IF
advertising "Opening all lockboxes at AH bridge - NO TIPS" 'cause I'm happy
to open boxes for ppl... when I'm not getting my mail:) And probably a
quarter of the people will tip anyway (which I never refuse, unless it's
ridiculous... like the 5g someone tried to give me for opening an Eternium
box). I've had plenty of people /w me and ask if I'd open a box for them,
and my answer is always 'yes', but I reckon it's bloody rude to just put a
box... a) without asking. b) with no tip. and c) when I'm standing next to
the mailbox.
Come to think of it, I wouldn't have opened even if the mage had put up a
tip.
