After reading the recent posts about Thief I decided to reinstall and give
it another go. I had never gotten to far the first go around. I checked
the forums for issues and work arounds but haven't found this one.
Movies run fine, I did the Indeo thingy. Whenever I go to enter a mission I
either get a black screen (regular thief.exe file) or a crash to desktop
(thieffixed.exe file).
Any clues?
Thanks,

There are a number of different problems with running the original Thief
games on modern computers. Do you have a dual core system, use
hyperthreading, or have multiple processors?
Anyhow, most of the old problems are addressed here:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75031
The TTLG forums are the best place for help with Thief, either for
technical help or when you get stuck on a mission.
A fellow called Timeslip has done some work improving the way the game
looks so you might want to check out his site, although the game is
playable without his tweaks. http://timeslip.chorrol.com/

That's where I started. I got the Indio SP2 fix and something else that I
forget what it is for. I don't have a dual core system, hyperthreading or
multiple anything. Most of the problems I've seen listed on the site have
been to do with seeing the movies and cutscreens. Those I have; it's when
the missions start the I bomb out.

If you're using a recent nVidia card, make sure you don't have later than
the 163.* series drivers. They mucked it up after that. Oh sure Crysis
might play but many other games no longer will.
Which version of TDP are you trying to run? Is it the patched 1.33 or
Thief Gold?
Are you using Darkloader?
I remember after using Darkloader you need to let it "optimize" the files
by moving them around a bit. Really it just makes a \crf folder inside
the \thief folder and moves all the *.crf files into it. Then it changes
the install.cfg to reflect the new location like so (for Thief Gold),
install_path e:\ThiefG
language english
resname_base e:\ThiefG\CRF
load_path e:\ThiefG
script_module_path e:\ThiefG
movie_path e:\ThiefG\movies
In my case I had to do 3 things. Use the thieffixedg.exe file, change the
processor affinity using imagecfg.exe (but you shouldn't need to do that)
and fix the folders as above so I wouldn't get a CTD with Thief Gold. Same
thing applies with Thief TDP except you use a different patched
executable.

On a Windows app?
You'd have better luck with WINE or ReactOS if you're taking that
route. >> Stay informed about: Thief: TDP problems |

I had an older driver (not sure which), I looked for older ones and couldn't
find it on their site. I ended up with their latest, same thing.

Installed from the disk - version 1.33. I think it origially came with a
video card. I hadn't seen a patch for a newer version so I left it at 1.33.

I'm using thieffixed.exe. No processor attributes to change. I don't
believe I'm using Thief Gold but I'll look up Darkloader and give it a try.

Hey Chuck
I've just been through the same as you and all was fine until I tried
some new character meshes.
I had to reinstall and then got you problem - the fix was to untick
the compatiblity mode property of thief.exe. I must have set this when
trying to get the new models etc. working

I've been playing around with the video settings. If I change the hardware
option to 'off' within video, the game will run. The best resolution I can
get is 800x600x8, however. Doesn't look very good. Maybe this is a clue
for somebody?

I've fooled around with the cam.cfg settings. With hardware mode off and
manually setting 1024x768x16 in the config file it runs and looks OK for an
old game. Way better than the default 800x600x8 bit setting. Once I found
the ingame gamma adjust it was even playable. Now if I can only get through
the tutorial. I seem to be stalled in the second room.
