Oh I read battle generator. They said that was sort of impossible with the
way the AI was coded.

I wonder is they still have waves of space invaders.

Ah well..I have the game..guess I might as well try it ...eh Mario;-)

AI ? coded ? Now you have me confused Smile

The AI in that game is totally scripted - in other words : the
reactive behaviour of the AI is determined by a script in the
scenario. Generating a scenario on the fly AND put a decent script in
there is indeed a tall order.

That part was a bold-faced lie by the developer. As everyone who saw
early screenshots of this game can attest it was originally developed
as a standard RTS game where shooting distances were like 5 times the
length of a tank's barrel. He got called on that lie, so I let it
rest, but it convinced me that developer was not there to get the low-
down on what was needed to make his game workable, but to convince
another bunch of gamers to trust him and not their own lying eyes. I'm
not playing that game. When I see a tactical WWII game with grass and
houses I expect that long grass stops LOS (it didn't) and that
infantry can enter houses (they don't) - if those things are not
possible they're better left out altogether, unless you go for the eye
candy crowd, which is ok, but don't call it a serious tactical wargame
then.

The reason I feel so strongly about this is probably because I was so
heavily disappointed by it. From the screenshots and previews it all
sounded like this was going to be the ultimate WWII tactical wargame.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to play the demo and notice this
stuff.

Don't be angry because you fail to notice flaws that are immediatly
obvious to those who aren't blinded by fancy graphics or their love
for a certain publisher.

> So, you are just doing this for fun or for your own agenda.

Nah, I just thought a guy yelling "oranges" while selling lemons could
do with the info that he was in fact selling lemons and that every non-
blind person could see this. But if the guy is obstinate enough to
keep saying he's selling oranges I stop caring because then he's
either stupid or a bold-faced liar - and fully deserving what comes
his way.

The only reason wargame elements were introduced is because it got
picked up by Battlefront. Would have made a pretty decent RTS game at
another publisher.

It gets better and better over there - Mario is in overdrive, never
mind that his actions are like watching a marching band going into the
front line - lot's of noice but no bullets to actually make a
difference - and that developer is now boasting they sold more copies
than all other wargames put together and somehow thinks that's an
impressive counter-argument to people pointing out obvious design
errors. <shakes head> There was point where I thought he was just
trying his best to put a brave face on this, now I think he's just
clueless.

I still have to see reports of infantry jumping and revealing power-ups in
the form of stars and gold coins - but after all Italians aren't in the
game... ^_^

You know, of all the things I've heard you say about CEAW, this is
still the one that confuses me the most. I have lots of games that
take longer to load than CEAW. Lots. Even so, none of them take long
enough that it bothers me as I figure that loading time is effectively
wiped out by the hour plus I then generally would spend playing the
game. It's not as if you need to re-load it every five minutes. I
believe that it takes an age to load on your system, but I have no
idea why given that it doesn't stand out as having an unusually long
loading time on any of the systems I've tried it on. Have you tried
some basic system maintenance and made sure you don't have anything
interfering (or 52 different versions of JAVA installed)? Have you
updated it to the latest version? Exactly how long does it take to
load vs. say CM:SF?

Regards,

- Erik

Wow, I haven't noticed any loading time once _in_ the game. Frankly,
now I'm even more confused as to what you are seeing.

To each his own on that. Many fantastic wargames in the same grand
strategy scale have made the same simplification. I don't count it as
a knock on the design or an error, though I realize that some may
prefer it otherwise.

> When you add those "small" things together you get results that producst

Honestly, I've seen quite good results in the game and many gamers
have told us that they enjoy the game (including many who voted for it
here). You can't analyze it on the same level as a "World in Flames"
though - it's meant as "grand strategy Panzer General style" and I
think it succeeds very well in that. Some grognards have disliked it
for being a bit too streamlined in some places (as they probably also
thought about PG), but the only real area that I myself thought could
be improved with the first release was the AI and that has been
significantly improved in the updates since.

> I will read review of that game on Wargamer and see has reviewer noticed

Well, if he didn't complain about those I think he's actually in the
majority. I can count on my hand the number of folks (including you)
I've seen who really _dislike_ CEAW, whereas I've lost count of the
number of compliments I've seen about it from gamers. IMHO Slitherine
and Johan did a great job with this one and I'm looking forward to
more from their team.

- Erik
