I have a galaga that has been having erroneous issues. I have pulled
all the chips out of the board and reseated them. Today when I went to
turn it on it kept resetting after it got through the startup
sequence. I decided to throw a voltmeter across the big cap on the
main board and measure and I was getting 4.65 volts. Thinking I found
the source of the problem I tried adjusting the voltage on the power
supply to get 5 volts at the main board. At first it didn't seem like
adjusting anything changed the voltage. I turned off the game,
unplugged all the power connectors everywhere, replugged them and
tried adjusting again. This time it seems to be at 5 volts and the
game is coming on stable.

I am not sure if the connectors were loose or had resistance, or if
the power supply "warmed up" and started to give the correct voltage.
I am still a little concerned about the power supply.

What are everyone's thoughts about changing to a switching power
supply for stability with the common galaga switcher connectors out
there? Personally I would prefer to stay with the original power
supply. Are there any rebuild kits for these Bally Midway power
supplies out there? Where would I get them?

There is a power supply solution available from Bob Roberts. Most of
the original power supply parts don't exist anymore. This is a Pacman
solution, the Galaga solution is a little different. It also requires
an adapter for the two molex connections on the boardset. The new
power supply solution will save your game board from the effects of a
bad power supply. Doh! I am new to this posting thing, just found out
I can't add a picture. I will email you the pic.

Im all for originality but go with a switcher. Not only will the voltage
be stable but it will reduce the temp inside the cab dramatically!

Hey,
Bob's stuff is great. But you may want to check out the
arcadeshop.com solution. I think its different than bob's and its
very clean. Look for the Galaga PS. It should have pics. I think
its like 45.00 & worked well on my Galaga. Best of Luck.

Two things:

1. Convert to a switcher - you will never touch the power again
2. Put a new edge connector in. It takes about 45 minutes (doing 1
wire at a time)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think if I still get the flaky
power in the next few weeks, I'm just going to go that route.

Additional:

I researched the $45 solutions for a Galaga switching power supply and
harness on the internet and figured I couldn't wait and wired up a
switcher harness tonight, complete with connector so I don't have to
hack into the original harness (in case a purist gets their hands on
this cab in the future).

I put in a switcher, hooked up the harness and fired it up. The Galaga
came up immediately without the reboot. I adjusted the supply to 5V at
the capacitor on the main board and played a few games.

All in all it seems we are good to go. The best news is something
unexpected. For some time it appeared as if my monitor had a faint
white "wave" or "ripple" which would go through it. I was under the
impression I would need to do a monitor repair in the near future when
it got worse. However, after putting in the switcher the wave in the
picture is gone!

I guess that means that there was a definite linear power supply issue
to be causing the previous video issue. I'm pretty happy with the
decision to "switch" to switchers.

Thank you for the input everyone.
