I'm planning to take part in my first tournament this Easter and the
final version of the tournament list is due to be sent in later this
week. It seems I'm still stuck in the old codex mindset because this
list I've come up with is very similar to what I would have made with
the old codex.
1700 point Tau empire tournament list:
HQ - Shas'el w/ plasma, missile, multi 87
HQ - Shas'el w/ plasma, missile, multi 87
E - 2x Crisis w/ twin plasma, flamer 118
E - Crisis w/ twin missile, target lock 95
Crisis w/ twin missile, flamer
E - 6 Stealth 180
T - 12 FCW, shas'ui, marker light 140
T - 12 FCW, shas'ui, marker light 140
T - 12 FCW, shas'ui, marker light 140
T - 15 Kroot + 1 hound 111
FA - 8 Gun drones 96
FA - 8 Gun drones 96
HS - Hammerhead, rail, 2x burst, multi, decoy 165
HS - Hammerhead, rail, 2x burst, multi, decoy 165
HS - Broadside, advanced stabilization system 80
Sum 1700
This list uses almost all Tau models I have, and would only require me
paint a single Kroot hound before the tournament. In addition to the
models above I have the following: 5 Kroot, 5 Kroot hounds, 1 Kroot
Ox, 1 Shaper and 9 Pathfinders. Lack of both time (for painting) and
money means I can't really make very dramatic changes to the list, but
advice on the list would still be appreciated.
I would have liked to give the FCW shas'uis target locks, and the HQs
targeting arrays or vectored thruster, but I have not been able to
make room for those upgrades :-/

One of the HQs got demoted to an ordinary crisis suit to make room for
some tasty upgrades. I also realized that twin plasma is now only
slightly less expensive than plasma plus a second weapon, so the
plasma suits got changed too. I don't expect the 3 EMPs to do much -
they're only there to fill the last few points.
HQ - Shas'el w/ plasma, missile, targetting array, hw multi 97
E - 2x Crisis plasma, fusion, multi 124
E - 1x Crisis w/ twin missile, target lock 142
2x Crisis w/ twin missile, flamer
E - 6 Stealth 180
T - 12 FCW, shas'ui w/ marker light + hw target lock + EMP 148
T - 12 FCW, shas'ui w/ marker light + hw target lock + EMP 148
T - 12 FCW, shas'ui w/ marker light + hw target lock + EMP 148
T - 15 Kroot + 1 Hound 111
FA - 8 Gun drones 96
FA - 8 Gun drones 96
HS - Hammerhead, rail, 2x burst, multi, decoy 165
HS - Hammerhead, rail, 2x burst, multi, decoy 165
HS - Broadside, advanced stabilization system 80
I started a game with this list yesterday. Gamma Cleanse versus
Marines. We got as far as the second turn and will continue the game
later this week. So far I've lost one Gun drone squadron (flew off
the board after 2 casualties), the HQ suit (deep striking assault
marines with plasma pistols) and two thirds of the Kroot (deep
striking terminators), and I've killed a predator, half a tac squad
and half a squad of sniper scouts.

Progress report (in the unlikely event that someone is still
interested):
We didn't finish today either, but it's looking good. We have one and
a half turn left, and I still have six scoring units, while my
opponent only has one left. The final version of the list is due
tomorrow, so unless anyone comes with a very convincing argument I'm
going to use something very similar to the updated list in the
tournament.

That's entirely possible, but it's now past the deadline for the
final list, so I can't do anything about it this time :-/
