Frightening Statistic - Hi folks - Heard something on the news I found this weekend, the world's will pass an estimated 6.5 Billion people. Meaning that the world's will have doubled since *1960*. 46 years. Yikes. This can't..

Ping: Miracle - Got the St Patty's day card and note book today. Thanks! The book looks great, and earned itself a spot on my desk next to the little container from Christmas (which receives lots of use)

I was Passing by... - Looooong time since I looked in here... A couple of faces (or names) are :)

Finally got around to reinstalling T1 - ... but for the life of me can't remember the variable to control FOV. 1440x900 is nice on it, but would like the extra vision.

Blogging, 4-04-06 - I'm a real piece of work, I'll tell ya. I bet I don't have three working memory cells left. I've spent the better part of yesterday and today trying to find my pen drive. Still haven't found it. I need the little devil so I can transfer some files..

I had a really nice dextromethorphan buzz going, so when
hubby asked me to go with him to see the latest hugemongous
TVs, I happily chirped "Okay!" and dutifully followed him to
the back wall of Wal Mart where the latest and greatest were
arrayed. Pretty awesome wall of color going on there.

Standing just a couple of feet away, my faced turned upwards,
enjoying my mild cough syrup overdose, I became aware of a
gradually increasing sensation of heat. Like when you step in
front of a fireplace, you know? You get warmer and warmer and
after awhile you get so warm that you either have to turn around
or step back.

So in my happy fog I mention this to Ross. I got "the look", but
after he stood beside me for a minute he agreed- he could feel
the radiating heat. Puzzled, and much more physically capable
than I, he walked back & forth placing his hand on various TV
screens.
Eventually he said "Touch the newer screens! The LC-whatevers
and those other ones!"

Yum. One of those really great geek moments that even drugs
couldn't dull. I knew he meant LCD and plasma, but I kept my
mouth shut. Gotta be the Good Wife every now and then.....

Anyways, he was absolutely correct. Both the LCD and the plasma
screens were more than warm to the touch, almost hot. Odd.
So I find a traditional TV, touch the screen, and it's cool. It's
got that static electricity thing going on, but it's cool. Find another,
and it's cool also. Huh.

Got home, fired up the TV, and waited for a half hour or so before
touching it. Got a helluva little zap, but it was cool. By now Ross is
very excited at his discovery, and makes me promise to ask you
fellows about this. So here I am, feeling up my laptop monitor
and asking for opinions on why LCD and plasma screens are warm
to the touch. At least those hugemungous TV screens, because my
laptop screen is cool to the touch.

Okay, I'm baffled. And curious.

I just felt my 22" wide lcd that's been on for over an hour. Warm, but
definitely not hot.

What you are noticing is the heat mostly given off from the backlight.
TV screens only have the beam hitting the phosphor. Now you could
compare the backs and tops of the two and you should see another
difference there.

Interesting point. But do plasma systems use a backlight? I thought they
provided their own light. LCD's are more like color filter wheels,
filtering light from some other source to appropriate shades and colors, so
have no light of their own, and hence they need a backlight.

The heat from a tube should be mostly from the power supplies, which crank
the voltage up from a measly 110 to a few thousand volts, enough to drive
an electron a foot across vacuum to impact the phosphors on the front face.
Plus the "steering" supplies which power the magnetic coils to steer the
electron to the right place on the face.

In my youth I helped design some monitors that never made it to market, and
got to swap a lot of big tubes between the test rigs. If you find yourself
needing to move a naked tube, be sure to take a ground strap and touch it
all over the tube, especially that hole in the side where the high voltage
connects. You want to drain any residual static. I've done that to a tube
and then come back 10 minutes later and still got zapped, so do it just
before you move the tube. (And dropping a tube can kill you if it implodes,
so I got good at taking a zap without flinching. Razz)

Check the specifications of TVs. You'll almost end up with this rule:
- LCD eat twice the power of a CRT.
- Plasma eat 3 times the power of a CRT.

The plasma dissipate a lot of heat... a LOT. If you live in an area where
you are on the verge of getting an air conditioning system. You'll have to
invest in some cooling if you wish to watch TV late spring to early autumn.

The thing you want to be sure 100% (read don't rely on the sale person
check the specs) is that there is a HDCP chip inside the TV. With it you'll
be sure to be able to enjoy HD protected content. (HD-DVD or Blue-Ray)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP

If you don't when the studios will use the protection token you'll end up
with an image quality just a tad better than usual DVD.

As the monkey with crabs stated, most of the heat from the LCD come from
the backlights. While on the plasma it's the technology that basically
throwing energy out of the window.

The LCDs are getting closer to Plasma in color/black quality and response
time. But the main domain where LCD kicks Plasma is the gonads... is
resolution. If you want to go Full HD 1920x1080 you'll end up selling a
kidney to get a 50" Plasma. While LCD reach this resolution with much
smaller screens. I have a PC monitor (Samsung 244T) that is 1920x1200. My
laptop 17" screen also runs in 1920x1200.

This last case is small for not perfect eyes... you'll feel like a
masturbating bat with glaucoma.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large-Screen_Television_Technology

To your question... Which one do you own? The answer is none. I still enjoy
my 7 years old 28" Sony CRTs. (one standard and one widescreen) In France
I'm able to get very little HD content. Less than 10 channels on the
satellite DVB-S, a couple of channels on digital antenna DVB-T, some events
in HD on DSL (french tennis open, major soccer games,...) most of the HD
content is fetched thru my DSL set top box with it's on demand services.

So I'll probably switch late this year or in 2008. I'll get a Full HD LCD
screen that suits my highly critical eyes.

?!?!? Valve?!?!? Is that similar to the old tube sets?

*Top* *Posting*

Yup yup- I gotta get some more sleep and come back.
I gotta make sure we don't end up with some huge monster
of a TV that throws off a lot of heat: air conditioning costs
plenty without adding another heat source that might be
unecessary. (<- Spelling?)
Ross wants to get a really large TV this coming winter,
so it's time to start researching options.

Sorry, I don't believe you are correct:

My 22" LCD Dell at work is 45 watts when active, 2 watts in standby.
A random Dell 17" CRT is 75 watts active, 7-10 in standby.

Plasma, I don't know a thing about other than they tend to lose their
beauty after a couple of years.

The British called tubes "valves". They've got a queer language over there,
don't they? Wink

(And they pronounce aluminum oddly, too!)

In article <462508f2$0$16265$88260bb3@free.teranews.com>,

Compare TVs... not computer monitors.

Reading the specs of the 42" Plasma and LCDs:
- LCDs are around 250W.
- Plasmas are around 330W.

While widescreen 100Hz 32" TV range from 120 to 150W. Of course it's not
the same screen size... but it's not the same usage or resolution either.
