Ok I'll give it a go.
The bad news is that there is no one answer to your problem and it's not
going to be easy to fix without some good tools.
With that said the problem is going to be one of the following. A bad cable
or connection. The 12 pin connector coming in to the monitor is a common
problem. I also check the sockets to the 4 transistors mounted on the
chassis. You could also try replacing the transistors but that would be one
of the last things I try. Also you can try hitting the side of the game
while it's acting up or wiggle the cables to see if that helps to isolate a
loose connection. Could also be a bad contrast pot, while you're at it look
at the brightness pot too. You may also want to check the 90vDC coming out
of the high voltage cage. Lastly it's your picture tube going bad, not much
you can test there with out the proper tools.
If it's any help you can send the chassis board and high voltage cage to me
and I can check them out for you if you don't have another one to try in
there place.
