How do you open the gates on Expert level to complete an optional
objective?

So you frobbed the ladder and got teleported? I presume so since you got the
objective. It's pretty easy. You just frob a lever that in a room by the
gate to open it and let the Hammers in. They should charge through the gate
and start fighting the Pagans.

Thanks Nightwalker. But, I seem to be missing something. I went into
the building and frobbed the lever. The gate opened and no one came
running in. I took out all the "baddies" and the Hammerites occupied the
city for the 1st optional objective.
After pulling the lever I went through and made it back to the city
and the Objective Red X'd out.

Answered too soon. I frobbed the wrong level. I frobbed the one by the
gate and not the door.
