Well, I know everyone is waiting with bated breath to see which system I
picked...
I have not picked either yet. I went to my LGS (no F at the front as you
will see why in a minute) and saw Hero 5th Revised and M&M 2nd. I picked
up both and started skimming through them. Once in awhile I would pick up
a source book for one of the systems. Anyway, I do this for about 45 minutes,
contemplating the fate of my role-playing universe, when one of the employees
comes over to me and asks if I am going to buy one. I looked up and thought
he was trying to strike up a conversation and might have experience with
one of them so I said "I am not sure, I am still trying to decide which system."
To which he replies "Well, I am going to have to charge you a $1."
"Excuse me?"
"We have a policy about reading the books. If you read them but don't buy
them then you have to pay $1."
"You are kidding, right? I haven't even come close to reading all 600+ pages
and I thought that policy was for comics only."
"No, I am not kidding. It is for comics but for all I know you have a photographic
memory and you are memorizing the rules."
At which point I just walked out ignoring his questions about where I was
going. Sometimes I just do not understand people. I know it was only a
$1 but give me a break. They might have had my $50 right then and there.
As it is, I am still on the fence. I am now branching out into what other
sourcebooks, campaigns, etc are available for each system. I have to say
that there seems to be a lot of things for each system but most of the HERO
stuff is done only by HERO Games whereas M&M has the M&M SuperLink and seems
to have items from different publishers/designers. Whether or not any of
that is good or bad, I am not sure. I just like to see variety and I think
it is a good sign when other publishers are creating material for the sytem.
I must say that I am leaning towrd HERO 5th. I feel like if I suddenly wanted
to play a horror or a modern or a post-apocalyptic setting, I could do it
with HERO and not have to buy another book unless I wanted some other specific
ideas or resources. I guess the same might be said for d20 but I have a
hard time reading the D&D Player's Hand Book and figuring out how to create
a hacker in the cyberpunk world of tomorrow. I also feel like if I picked
up an M&M sourcebook or adventure, I could convert it to HERO rules (if someone
had not already done so).
Anyway, that's where I am. I am reading the HERO forum, too. Maybe I will
find other HERO players in the area and be able to learn the system as a
player before being a GM. I am also reading the M&M forum. Lot of great
stuff on both forums.
Thanks for listening.
Anyone have any superhero gaming this weekend to post about? This newsgroup
is too quiet for my taste.
