Switch weapon should I use

There's no reason that you can't still use those items but by having 1 point
into Vengeance this will counter the IM.. Vengeance deals Elemental damage
not physical. Also note that depending on the distance that you are to the
Oblivion Knights the different curses apply. I've noticed that if you get
quite close to them they tend to change curses to Decrepify mainly in order
to give them the possibility to turn and get away from you.

I did try Vengeance and, yes, got downed very quickly.

I am lvl85 at the moment so I'll try the charge with some points and see how
it goes.

Btw, I am finding the ebotd great, but will look into the grief (more gear
to get!)

That's what usually happens when you perform a melee attack with IM
around...

Not doing a melee attack, but a ranged attack. I've used Gimmershred
myself for melee builds, just throwing them while keeping back from the
action, and letting the merc take the heat. It will cost quite a bit
though, in resurrection costs for the Merc.

Other option would perhaps be one of the bows/crossbows which deal a lot
of elemental damage; Hellrack, Buriza, etc.
