I was shocked when I check the price they asked for a virtual item in one of
the game I currently playing. It's Risk Your Life 2 hosted in Malaysia...
The game is Free to Play, and they have something called "Avenger Items",
which is essentially uber stats weapons/armors/shields in game. I am at
level 60++ and is already able to equip the best sword they offer (i.e. The
items they offer is just mid-game level, not the final equipments - I am
assuming the game have a maximum level of 99 or 100 - judging from the
content and the highest level players in ranking), so I checked out the
price they asked for. It's ain't easy to find but I managed to dit that info
out from their badly designed/maintained website.

Each item is priced at 6000 rp (resource point), and since this game was
converted from Pay to Play to Free to Pay, they accept month card as a way
to exchange for the so called Resource Point. 1 month card can be exchanged
for 1500 rp. So to get one uber (but not TOP grade, since the item offerd
are just A grade, but the top grade could be AAAAA grade, yes 5 A's)
mid-level item, I'll have to buy 4 month cards at RM38 (approx. $10 USD)
each.

So I'm curious, will any of you guys willing to buy a mid-level uber (but
not ultimate) item for $40 USD?

What I noticed, quite a lot of non-Malaysian players did buy the itmes, but
not to use them as equipment, but as a sacrifice for upgrading thier items
(The game allow of upgrading equipments via combining 2 equipments of same
type, same grade, taking the value of the sacrifice item add to the value of
the original item). I doubt many Malaysians would be buying these items
since 4x RM38 = RM152 is a pretty big sum, given the average monthly salary
of most youngsters (gamers) here ranging from RM600 to RM800. (approx. $158
to $210 USD).

These companies are really going money crazy.....

Never.

Period.

And if that was the only way to get items needed to become/remain a viable
player, I'd never start to begin with or quit pronto if I was already
playing once it became evident that's what it took.

That's a pretty insane price, IMO. When you consider that that's a
brand new game, or roughly 3 full months of gametime for any other
MMORPG, $40 for a single item is... Well, insane.

Personally, I don't have a significant problem with buying/selling
items in MMORPGs, especially when you're talking about a free-to-pay
MMORPG where they need to make their money somehow. My own thought
would be that I consider $15-$20/month about the right price for a
game (though, of course, that's assuming its a fun game that I want to
play Smile ) The question then is how much 'entertainment value' would I
get from a sword: the answer is 'probably not a whole lot'. Even if
I would use it for a few months, the sword itself wouldn't
particularly give me entertainment for more than a short time. For
one thing, you'd still need weapons and armor. For another, I
consider finding new equipment via gameplay to be a rather important
element of the fun I have in a game. I MIGHT pay about $5 for a
sword, but that would likely be about it.

Was highly involved in CoV still, until my latest joint replacement round,
this time a left shoulder. I've only managed a couple of hours since the
surgery, the constant need for left arm/wrist/hand involvement being a bit
more than I'm up to so far. I expect to pick it up again in at least a
couple of weeks or less, though.

In the meantime I picked up Titan Quest, which can mostly be done with the
mouse hand. It stands to become an enormous time sink--not quite up to the
standards of *that* particular time sink, I don't believe, but the closest
thing yet, I'm thinking, after no more time with it than I've had.

And I want to continue with Spellforce 2, as well, although I haven't
touched it in 4-5 weeks.

BTW, it's been getting close to 3 months since I've touched D2 and I have no
desire whatever to even renew my characters/accounts, even. After 6+ years
it might finally be over. Smile( (or however you'd show happy/sad together)

I dropped out of UO for a year or so and then decided to go back. I'd
given my house away to a friend, so I went to ebay and for $15 I got a
placed house and several chests full of reagents. This allowed me to
jump right back in and get into the game without having to scramble for
resources and the amount of money was trivial (I can't even get myself
and the wife into a movie for that).

That said, I wouldn't go out and buy items for my WoW characters. I've
never been felt that I needed any item that badly.

A friend bought both our level 40 mounts by playing auction house
trader, buying underpriced items and selling them at a markup. That
ended up being too much like work, though, not sure what we will do
when we get to level 60 (or when we want to buy flying mounts after BC
comes out).

The world is filled with fools who are ripe for the plucking. Sounds
like a new way to pluck. WISH I'D THOUGHT OF IT.

To answer your question how much real money would I pay for a virtual
ITEM? ZERO, NADDA, KEIN GELD, NOT ONE RED CENT!

Yep, that's what I would consider a pretty good example of a good
reason to buy virtual items.

One item that I was tempted to buy for myself in WoW was some gold to
get my level 60 epic mount. Saving up 1000 gold was more than a
little annoying. If it would have been cheaper I probably would have,
but it was just a bit outside my budget. Other than that, though, I
don't think there's anything in WoW that I would consider buying
(although with the game's bind-on-pickup that makes 99% of the game's
high-end items unbuyable anyway, there's not that much to choose from
anyway.)

Nothing in my case. I would never pay real $ to buy stuff in a game
I'm already paying a monthly fee for. Now, if the game is free then I
might do it, considering I would be paying $15/month in another game,
or maybe a combination of those

I would, too, and I've always said there should be an option to start a
character in Hell mode at level 65--there is an option to skip to level 30
in SP I think, but I've never used it since I never played D2 SP.

OTOH, an experienced D2 player can get a character through to Hell
"normally" in just a few hours, and I'd imagine similar time reductions for
such advancements in other games, too. And that's what I generally did,
since the few characters I did "rush" somehow never seemed quite "real" to
me.

At one point Everquest had a real economy larger than that of many countries,
easily in the top 20; just on the creation and sale of virtual items.

But that isn't surprising, money has no intrinsic value; it's only worth what
people agree it's worth.

I hear what you are saying, and yet, and yet. For me, it's a role playing game,
and the fun is in building the character and working them through the game; not
in rushing to the end, power levelling, and [whatever]. That just isn't any fun
for me at all. None. Your mileage varies, obviously, and that is cool.

But hell, in GW you don't even have to take that route to get to a PVP char,
you already start out at lvl 20 if PvP is what you are after.

Thing is, Jim, I've seen a lot of people in the Crystal Desert who just plain
can't play the damn game. That's who my babyfood comment was aimed at. I've
also seen people there ascending with lvl 15 chars who are obviously
experienced players like yourself. Apologies if I inadvertantly trod on any
toes; as I said, I can see what you are doing, even if it wouldn't work for me.

cheers, -P.

I've run several characters through the whole game (or mostly) before
deleting them to make room for another.

But the journey is the fun, not the destination doesn't work for
everyone - and a lot of players only want to have a level 20 because all
their friends do - the same reason they'll farm for months to get that
rare item and/or enough gold to buy the 15k armors.

>But hell, in GW you don't even have to take that route to get to a PVP char,

Well, sort of.
You only get access to the good abilities on that pure-pvp character
that you've unlocked on other characters in the PVE campaign(s).

Without those they aren't likely to be more than a punching bag in pvp
for those players that do have them.

I remember seeing a guy in the Crystal Desert like that - turns out his
son had the character run ahead, so "Dad" missed out on all the learning
on the way.
