Let's pretend your party is wandering a wilderness trail and is ambushed by
a Giant party. They were lying in wait and no one spotted them, the first
sign of danger is the whistling sound of a boulder flying through the air.
2 of the party members make listen checks and hear the boulder before it
hits the group. The group now rolls initiative and only the two who made
their listen checks can act in the next round. Player X rolls real low on
their initiative and did not make their listen check, so does not get to act
in the surprise round, and their initiative is so low that they in fact
don't get to act until the giants have had three volleys of boulders.
So the question is, should the first attack have been the surprise round?
It seems rather unfair that the Giants get to attack three times before
Player X can act. I can definitely see twice given the a failed spot/listen
and low initiative roll, but the first boulder attack should have been the
surprise round IMHO

When the giants attacked, combat started. At THAT point, not when the
boulders are in the air or hitting the party, you have to determine who
is aware of whom, and who gets to participate in the surprise round.
Since everyone failed their spot checks, only the giants participate.
After the surprise round, everyone is aware of combat, and acts in
initiative order.
The extra listen check is just, well, weird. >> Stay informed about: Surprise round question... |

The listen check was made in leiu of a spot check. DM ruled that no one
was able to spot the ogres and giants, because they were so high up I guess.

yeah, but the spot check is only to know where the boulders are coming
from, so you can attack back; even if the people can't see who is
attacking, they can still do active defenses after the first surprise
round. The boulders are visible, even if you don't, yet, know where
they're coming from.
I've seen this kind of thing in AMTGARD (sort of capture the flag with
swords [big, foam-rubber swords]). Sometimes you know an arrow came
from somewhere, but can't, right away, spot the shooter.
So, you have your weapons out, and are ready to dodge, but you can't
attack, you're too busy rubbernecking...."Where is he?" "Where is he?"
Heh...had this same thing with B-B guns, too. Guys couldn't see me to
shoot me, but they could still dodge....or hide.... >> Stay informed about: Surprise round question... |

The DM ruling was faulty in that only the first volley of boulders
should have been the surprise round. Once the giants launched the
boulders, combat timing becomes important and combat starts.
The two members that succeed on Listen can also act in the surprise
round. All characters roll initiative but only the two characters that
succeed can act, and if they win against the (yet unseen) giants they
can act first, taking cover or using magic to protect themselves.
Once the first volley ends, the surprise round is over, and everyone
else also acts on their intitative. However, unless the characters have
managed to see or hear the giants, they *still* don't know what is
attacking them -- they only see huge boulders crash down at them from a
ledge or something. They would be wise to take cover first, then try to
regroup and attack.
In other words: you are right. Your DM dropped the ball on this one. >> Stay informed about: Surprise round question... |

No I didn't the giants sure did though, oh and they were rocks not balls. 8P
Either way it wouldn't have made a difference. The giants were a hundred
feet up and the spellcasters of the group had no clue what was going on at
the time.
My bad on the surprise ruling.

Both the giants and I were both smokin the doobies that night I can tell
you. It's a little known fact that Giants harvest the best weed.
I think Werebat can attest to this....he is the predominant seller of Giant

No, that's steroids. Just ask Barry Bonds. Oh, you meant a different
sort of "Giants." My bad.
