Finally completed it the other day. What a waste of time & money. I felt
completely empty after the ending, and the end "boss" was pathetically easy.

I've been seriously disappointed with pretty much every GameCube version
of Nintendo's franchises:

Mario, only Mario Bros 2 is worse
Zelda, OoT, need I say more?
F-Zero, best on the 64 (Deathmatch & X-Cup!!)
Starfox, awesome on the snes (for the time) and on the 64 the dynamic
level progression was brilliant
Mario Kart - The DS is the best MK game to date imo!

oh wait, there is one - Wave Race - better on the cube!

The 'problem' with long running series like Mario and Zelda is if they
never change anything from the first game, everyone complains "It's the
same game over and over". If they make any changes, everyone complains
"It's not the same game anymore".

There will always be one game in the series that is head and sholders
above the others, and one (or in the case of Zelda, three) that should
be swept under the rug and forgotten.

I will ask which Gamecube Starfox game you have an issue with, just to
be clear.

I didn't own a Gamecube this generation although I really wanted one so
that I could play Super Mario Sunshine. Now I'm being told that it's a
real letdown. The sad thing is, I'm getting more excited about New Super
Mario Bros than I ever have about any other Mario game since Super Mario
World. Since taking him out of 2D he just hasn't had the same appeal to me!

I want to get a Wii when it comes out and I was hoping to revisit some
of the Gamecube titles. Looking at Vitani's list, am I going to be
disappointed? Should I just buy the N64 games? I've only got SM64 on the
N64 and I find it dull. The last Nintendo machine I owned where I spent
a lot of money on games was the SNES.

The games I was looking at were:
Super Mario Sunshine
F-Zero
Mario Kart
Metroid Prime

How do these compare to their SNES/N64 counterparts?

In its defence, recently I picked up Mario Sunshine again after a few
years to replay it and found it to be a fine game still.

There are plenty of levels, hundreds of secrets bits to get. There's bits
to make your heat beat faster, and some jumps that make you bite your
joypad before stamping on it and snapping the disc in two while swearing
like a trooper - to me, that is a good Mario game.

True, the ending is a little toss, and the boss (the only one in the game
pretty much) is a little lacklustre, but there are more than enough
characters and quests to keep you going for a while, and enjoy doing it.

So it didn't quite blow me away like Mario 64 did, but it was close. Two
thumbs up.

There are parts of this game that are completely awesome, pure genius - and
there are some parts that are completely BS. One level is ruined by terrible
camera controls; and collecting blue coins is no fun.

> F-Zero

I own this but haven't played it a lot. I understand it's very hard.

> Mario Kart

Don't own.

> Metroid Prime

Easily my favorite Gamecube game. Very different from the SNES games (being
first-person), but very similar in feel. The focus is not so much on the
shooting as it is on exploring and finding items. Metroid Prime 2 is also
good but I like the first game better.

Don't forget Zelda - the gameplay is maybe not as good as Ocarina of Time,
but IMO it's the best looking game I've ever seen.

Not everyone (ie. me) likes "side-quests", and secret bits, we like
meaty games that last for hours & hours just on the main game, and if we
feel like it, we can explore secrets and bits.

Mario World had around 80 levels, Mario Sunshine had 8, and that
includes Delfino Plaza! I know there's more involved in 3D worlds, but
Mario 64 had more than 8 levels, so that's hardly an excuse.

And like RP wrote, there's only 1 boss in Mario, Mario Bros. 1 had 8,
and that was on a NES cart!

*sigh*

I hope Wii really does provide new ways to play, I need it.

I also got really annoyed with the unchanging "tropical" theme.

Not that it's a bad thing to have a consistent theme, I think SMS just
didn't do a good job with it. Everything just felt kind of dead, like
being in a normally busy area after most places have closed...

First off, there was not 1 boss in the game...there were a couple

you had the Pirannah Plant thing in the begining of the game

and the pirannah plant that flew around and spit out sludge everywhere

Also you had the bit caterpillar on the beach.

Oh and the manta ray at the hotel.

Oh and that petey pirannah plant on top of the tall hill

ohh yeah there is also the octopus thing that has that cork in his
nose.

hmm..I seem to remember cleaning the bosses teeth in the swimming level

Dare I forget the Mecha Bowser in the carnival level

OHH OHH OHH the big boo at the bottom level of the casino counts too!!!

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few also...so now lets see I easily named 9,
and there are probably more...HOW DID YOU PEOPLE HONESTLY THINK THERE
WAS ONLY ONE BOSS? Also, SMB1 didn't have 8 bosses, it had one boss you
fight 8 times, everytime you beat him THE EXACT SAME WAY...either shoot
him with fireballs or jump over him and cut the bridge.

I personally don't care whether anyone else liked the game or not. But
at least if you are going to try to convince others of why you didn't
like, have your facts right. I happened to enjoy it (yes the theme of
the game got to be a bit tiresome). Was it the best SMB? Course not. Do
I care? Course not. but who would ever say, "this game sucked cause it
wasn't better than the last one?" That is one of the dumbest things
I've ever heard.
