I'm considering selling my cocktail style Missile Command game at the
upcoming Super Auction in San Jose next weekend. I've been trying to
sell it for a while now. Asking $500 but negotiable. Haven't had a
single bite so far. So, I was thinking perhaps I would go take the
chance and see what happens.
For those who have sold a lot of classics at these things....what has
your experience been? When I've gone as a buyer it seems totally
random. Some days it seems like the games sell for outrageously high
prices. But other times they go for really cheap. Has anyone seen any
rhyme or reason to this? Or do you have recommendations on what to do
to ensure that it earns a fair price? The game looks good and plays
good. And I've gone through it so it shouldn't have any trouble.
Should I put a sign on it saying I will warantee the thing? Should I
stand next to it and show people that it also plays Super Missile
Attack (multi-kit)? Will I need to guard it to make sure someone
doesn't sabotage it?
I could just use some pointers from the old pro's. I'm not looking to
make more than it's worth. Just a fair price. Or should I not even
risk it and just keep advertising on Craigslist? Thanks for the ideas!

Put locks on all doors then give the keys to the winning bidder.
Locks will prevent tampering.
Don't give any sort of warranty.

I think you would get $200-300 for it at auction.

Lets say it goes to $300. YOu have a $14 entry fee and then 17% of the
hammer price paid to Super Auctions. Thats $65 to SA!
Game sales have slowed a lot so the auction may be the route to go if
you need space. If you need $, hold on to the game until the Xmas season
comes into full swing.

Hmmmm. Overwhelmingly negative so far. Perhaps I should heed this
sage advice since Christmas isn't so far away and I may have better
luck then. But then, I also enjoy the fun of an auction. Has anyone
had better luck than this? It sure seems to me that I went a year or
so ago and the prices were just way up there. But maybe I'm
misremembering. >> Stay informed about: Super Auctions - to sell or not to sell....that is the que.. |

As an aside....I thought perhaps it wasn't that fun a game and that's
why I wasn't getting interest. But then we had a group of teenagers
come to our house from my church and they were all over it. I thought
they would all go for my mame games and a bunch did. But I was really
surprised how many of the teenagers and their parents all loved the
game. But as someone pointed out....the prices seem really depressed
at the moment. >> Stay informed about: Super Auctions - to sell or not to sell....that is the que.. |

While true I find that as the weather gets colder people spend more
time inside and start thinking about their arcade hobby. Not during the
summer when everybody's hitting the roads on vacation or enjoying the
warm weather. Hang onto the MC for a couple more months til Christmas,
you'll be sure to get your buyer for it. >> Stay informed about: Super Auctions - to sell or not to sell....that is the que.. |

Oh I forgot to add....
A few years ago I took my Dragon's Lair (fully working) to SA in San
Jose. This was around 1999-2000 when prices were high. The DL was the
first game to sell. A lot of people looked at it/played it. The same
bidder offered to buy the game outside the auction, but I, having
brought the game all the way over, wanted to see some auction action.
When it came to bidding it went for $900.
The punch line here is I got $780, the buyer ended up spending $1100 or
$1200 (credit card). You do the math.
I never sold a game at SA again thereafter. I'll probably return to buy
but never to sell.

I'm assuming that if I buy it back myself then I would have to pay all
the fees right? Plus I would end up bringing it back home which would
mean less room for bringing home anything I bought at the auction. But
an earlier message brought up a good point....maybe I could just sell
it in the parking lot outside the auction....has anyone else done that? >> Stay informed about: Super Auctions - to sell or not to sell....that is the que.. |

Do you want maximum money for it? Then part it out on eBay or the newsgroup
Do you want to sell it for what it's worth? eBay it whole
Do you want to sell it quick with no hassles? Super Auctions
Keep in mind it's perfectly within the rules to shill your own game at
Super Auctions. Bid it up and if you don't like the end price, but it
back yourself.

You just pay a $14 buy back fee. Your total fees would be $28 that would
be paid to SA ($14 entry, $14 buy back).

Yes and no. You will pay the $14 entry fee plus the buyback fee (I think
that's $14 also) but not the commissions. Sure, you could sell it in the
parking lot if you believe there's a willing buyer. It's possible but
far from a sure thing.
