This is the world of Pern, a planet described by Anne McCaffrey in her series of Dragonrider novels. Set amongst the tropical canopy that is the Southern Continent, Southern Weyr is home to residents and crafters of all ages and abilities as well as the dragons and riders of Pern, who protect us from the evil(TM!) threat of Thread. Thread is a deadly organism that drops from the sky to devour all organic substances, including humans. Dragons are the first and only line of defense, their human partners chosen from among a select few. And another Hatching is right around the corner. That's right, Southern Weyr rides Search!
