Post subject: Stuck! Little Help Plz K Thx
Archived from groups: rec>games>roguelike>adom (more info?)

Wow. Seems like a long time since I've had to ask this question. Come
to think of it, it *has* been a long time since I've asked this
question!

I'm not used to doing well with trolls. Normally, I don't play them at
all, as a matter of fact. But in doing a marathon 'boredom' session, I
came up with a Troll Druid who, at first, started out terribly. And I
mean that genuinely. Pure-D *terrible*. But for some reason, she
managed to survive. And survive. And *SURVIVE*. And now I've got a
possible winning game on my hands... except for the fact that I'm
stuck. I know where I need to go, but I also know that I can't handle
it. So I'm hoping folks can help out a bit.

The character is, right now, level 20. Good ol' trolls and their level
issues. She's got a fairly good selection of spells, though not much
in the way of ball spells, and no good places to pick any up. She's
done most of the crone's quests. I'm hoping to find a Scroll Of Danger
somewhere, but I'm really not having any luck with it. Doing some ID
scumming at the moment to try my luck. I'm not high enough level to
handle the Tower Of Eternal Flames (at least I don't *think* so), but
just yet there's nowhere else to go. Going to hit the library when my
stealth is at 100 and hope. But until then... anyone have some
suggestions for what I can do with this troll to A) level her enough
to take on the tower (or what items I should maybe get) and/or B) find
that darned Scroll Of Danger so I can finish the quests?

I've cleaned out the puppy cave, UD, High Mountain Village, Ironforge
(drained all the pools dry), Tomb Of Kings, Dwarven Graveyard,
Pyramid, CoC down to the fire wall, dug all the graves in both
graveyards, and raided Mama Dragon's cave. I even scummed trees with
the Banshee for a while before she got a lucky hit on me and utterly
destroyed my armor; I decided to stop playing. Am I forgetting
something? I'd like to hope not, but I might be. Anyway, if someone
wants to give a suggestion, I'm all ears! I'm really sort of hoping to
be able to do an ultimate finally, but if I can't get through the Fire
Tower, I don't really have a chance for that.

Yep.

You're forgetting Darkforge. DF might be a bit tough for this
char right now, but you should be able to handle it with a
bit of caution, and get the Crown of Science, which will
grants fire immunity. Do that, bless the RoI, and he can
probably handle the Tower.

As for the ?ofDanger, the only thing I can suggest is
poolscumming, unless you can find a scroll shoppe,
which doesn't sound all that likely right through here.

I think he meant Darkforge when he said Ironforge.

If you got some nice offensive spells, you may wish to go to bugville
but I don't recommend it yet. Or you can go visit quicklings in their
tree if you have the necessary corruptions but again I wouldn't do
that until the last dive into the CoC. You can also try to find Blup's
mum. Minotaurs and Unicorns are still out of reach because of the
level requirement. Also after blessing that RoI put it on your right
hand, it can't hurt. And wearing Crown of Science in ToF is a big
NO-NO because it will make your RoI fail more often and it will burn
your blanket even faster, so don't wear it unless you really don't
have any other source for fire resistence.

As for SoD, you can go and pickpocket gremlins if you have the
patience.

Also you really didn't have to post you entire inventory.

I'm new to newsgroups but a long
time adom player.

I play Trollish Driuds a lot, in
fact they are my favorite characters
to play. You have everything you
need to do the fire temple. I'm
glad you listed your items, and I
wish you had listed your spells
and stats.

Firstly you are carrying some stuff
you really don't need (7 uncursed
fireproof blankets!!). You might
consider dropping some of the
redundant stuff. I usualy only
have 1 blessed fireproof blanket
when I do the fire temple, but it
works best if you limit your
inventory. The more you carry, the
faster the blanket burns up. Also
I never use rings of ice myself
but if you use them, you need 2
to prevent destruction of the items
you wear %100. 1 blessed ring gives
about %95 - %98 I think. I normaly
just wear the best fireproof items
I have and forget the rings, but you
have much better items than I do
at that point, so they might be worth
it for you.

I just switch tactics to coward
and rely on frost bolt spells, every
fire creature is badly hurt by them.
Even if they shrug off a lot of them,
it doesn't take too many to kill even
the ACW. And remember, you can teleport
on every level except the last one.
I sometimes lead the ACW near the
staircase, it will give me a quick
escape route. If there is a monster
between you and the ACW it wont bolt
you, it still might confuse you though.

Since you didn't list your spells, I
don't know if you have frost bolt and
teleport. Here is a list of some things
you can do to make do with the items in
your inventory, if you don't have the
spells.

Give some !'s of
(healing (17!), carrot juice (13!),
balance (7!), cure poison (15!), etc...)
to the fool. use the booze to recharge
wands of cold and a few for teleport
(unless you have the spells).

Zap WoW's - you might learn new spells
or even get a wish with those (14!) charges
(17!) if you use final charges on some.

As for exp. I don't think you need
more, but if your in the ID lv 40
or so, listen for a *thumb* sound.
It might be a greater moloch. Those
things are full of exp. points. Trollish
Druids should have no problem killing
them, if they have teleport and either
acid\lightening bolt. Get the slow thing
to follow you through a narrow corridor
so they can't get out of line with your
acid bolt spells, bolt them till they
get close then teleport behind them and
do it again (with 7LB you might not need
to teleport). This would take more
castings than you have MP though, so you
would have to use your HP + healing spells
to kill it. This will cost you a point of
mana if it's ADOM 1.1.1, but it's probably
worth it for a few levels up. You can
always train your mana stat by casting
BLESS on yourself until MP gets low, as
a druid you almost always have the BLESS
spell.

Another way to get a level or 2 is the
bug temple. It's only dangerous if you
don't know the tricks. You might try
practicing this a few times with a
different character first. I personaly
begin almost every game that I play
(as a spellcaster) by going to the bug
temple at level 1. I kill about 20-30
greater bugs and 5-10 killer bugs, and
it's good for about 14 exp. levels for
non-trolls, or 7-9 for trolls at level 1.
Here are some tips for bug level:

No bugs can shrug off bolt spells, not
greater or killer. 2 bolt spells *always*
kills greater bugs, and 3 bolt spells
*always* kills killer bugs, even if
willpower is 1 and spell effectivity is at 1.

Both types of bugs can sometimes travel
2 spaces in 1 turn, (according to how
fast you are) or they can travel 1 space
and then hit you. For this reason if a
GB is 2 spaces from you, and in line with
a bolt spell, you can always kill it. This
won't work with KB's though, it takes 3.
The Kb must be at least 3 spaces away to
safely bolt it once and then leave. Or 5
spaces away to bolt it once, then it's 3
spaces away, bolt it the second time and
it's right next to you, then bolt it the
third and final time.

Make sure the bugs don't gang up on you,
if more than 1 comes awake on you at one
time simply leave and re-enter. Carefully
make your way back to where you left, and
you will see them again, only this time you
will approach them 1 at a time. Just make
sure they line up with bolt spells before
you blast.

When you first enter the bug temple move
downward 1 space, if you don't see the GB
then wait 1 turn, now you will see it. It
will be 2 spaces up and to the left, in
line with a bolt spell this means you can
kill it. Move all the way to the top of
the screen along the right hand side of
the level, no bugs will wake on you. Move
left until you get to the tree, if you
don't see the bug then wait 1 turn, then
you will see it. Probably you will have
to exit along the top of the map because
2 bugs will most likely wake up. When you
re-enter just carefully move upward till
you see it, if it doesn't line up with a
bolt spell just exit and re-enter 1 more
time, then it will.

The rest is pretty much the same, just
move left along the top of the map. You
shouldn't have any more problems with
several bugs awakening on you at one time,
until you get to the KB's. They might wake
2 or 3 at a time, but just exit and re-enter.
Shooting a bolt downwards from the top of
the level is not a good idea since it will
probably awaken several bugs.

As for looking for SoD or any thing else,
I wouldn't until after checking the gift
shop in the casino.

To thread above: whoops. Yeah. I meant Darkforge rather than
Ironforge. For some reason, my mind keeps wanting to call it the
Ironforge. Maybe because Iron Golems will show up down there. ... of
course if that was the case, you'd think I'd call it the Steelforge.
Meh. Never mind!

Stats, I can list without being spammy:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Character Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rorcha St:36 Le:26 Wi:30 Dx:33 To:39 Ch:19 Ap:17 Ma:29 Pe:
42 N+
DV/PV: 77/50 H: 328(328) P: 205(205) Exp: 20/2702464 M: 158942

I could get them higher with scumming for dragon-gold in the swamps or
mountains, as well. I've got perma-invisibility from one of those
darned pools, and that cloak.

As for spells, no need to get blasted by the newsgroup for another
bout of OMG SPAM. But I do have Frost Bolt at good effectivity (+12
and 851) and Teleport (+4; not that it matters so much here, and
859) .... and no ball spells but a very anemic Lightning Ball. Even
after a trip to the library (which taught me I can't handle Diamond
Golems with my spear).

Generally, going through the Fire Temple, I don't end up with
Inventory burned. It's the stuff I've got worn that gets it. Usually
my cloaks, bracers, and bows (bigsadface). But that's been the...
er... not-very-many times in the past, so it's hard to be sure.

I've got a good Eternium Spear Of Thunder that I've been saving, and a
few Eternium Caps from the chaos knights. Nothing to save the bow,
though, and I hate walking around without *some* kind of missile
weapon.

Much safer than getting within smacking distance of the ACW, yes. Smile
I'll give it a go and see if it won't work for me. The bolt-shrugging
has been my bane for quite a while, though maybe with some extra
Scrolls Of Power, I'll be able to handle it.

These'll be some really handy suggestions. Plus, luring the ACW down
the stairs to be able to teleport away from him is a good way to keep
a distance and not get corrupted.

The biggest issue with WoW-zapping is that if I *do* get a wish, it
costs the MP and stat points to cast it, no? Which, at several
thousand points, is an 'ouch' for my 214 points of PP.

Another really good suggestion here, actually. I've been doing it
through healing myself and monsters (lots of Cure Light Wounds) but I
didn't consider the 'Bless' thing for the same end.

Wow. You've got the Bug Temple down to a *science*. I applaud you.
I've been there a total of three times, and one of them I didn't make
it out alive. The other two, I had high range ball spells and was
using them on Killer Bugs. I never wanted to go there without the ball
spells for fear of being surrounded. I may give it a shot, with these
tips, more often! .... I still don't really want to take a non-
spellcaster in there, though. Very Happy

> As for looking for SoD or any thing else,

Yeah. That took getting past the ACW, though, and I didn't think I
could manage. Having been to the library and managing to get the
scroll (as well as a WoW with *5* charges; best one *EVER*), I at
least finished that quest (already in and out of Chaotic; not crowned
yet but I'll do so before I take on the Wyrm).

Thank you for the really in-depth suggestions here! I think this'll
give me the edge I need to be able to get through. Here's hoping! I've
never had an Ultimate Ending, though I think this one's got a chance
at it (aside from the depth of ID I'm going to have to dive for the
bard... sob)

The ToEF and Air Temple are two major irritations
when it comes to missles. I remember back in one of
the earlier ADOM releases, the item destruction
was so bad in the air temple it was crazy!

I know how you feel.
I always equip some scurgari before the tower,
but always forget to use them once inside.

If you decide to cast spells out of your HP,
it might cost you a point on mana. May be worth
it though, Cure Light Wounds at effectivity 15 or
so should yeild 10-15 Hp and it costs only 3-5 MP
to cast. That means even if MP=0 you can still
descend the stairs, heal yourself to Max HP,
re-enter and resume casting. I think your blessed
RoI would protect your 7LB long enough to make a
run for the stairs.

I checked in ADOM 100 and 111, you can zap WoW
as many times as you like. MP goes to 0 but HP
is always untouched. I don't know for sure about
the stat drain however, I only generated a few
characters to check the wands effect on HP, not
enough to actualy get a wish.

A strange thing I hadn't noticed before, I couldn't
get Yggaz to trade me booze for the !'s I started
with. I had to set the date to Dec. 31 to start
with some other potions.

I don't know if this is common knowledge but I'll
post it any way. Here are some tips for ID diving.

When a room like this is generated in the upper
right or left hand corners, the next stair
case is almost always in the room directly below.
In my experience like 90%. It's worth going up and
down 10 or so times to generate these kinds of rooms,
it speeds your dive through the ID. Reducing # of
turns in the ID means less corruption.

also these work if generated in the bottom
left or right hand corners

These are also likely, but not as likely as
the above examples. These work if generated
near a corner and lead directly to a corner.
Just chose right or left, which ever is
closer to a corner.

Sadly, RGRA's curse hit again, albeit a little more delayed. The good
news: I made it through the ToEF. You were right, Gut: the Nether
Bolts were good enough to keep the bunch down and out, although I had
to deal with being surrounded at one point when I accidentally dug
into the Fire Elemental 'den'. Yeowch!

The bad news: descending further, the Cat Lord made mincemeat out of
me. I couldn't hit him worth *anything*, and he sure as heck could hit
me. Webbing, spells, all went to naught: by the time I could lure him
off the level so I could teleport, he'd already whacked me down into
the red zone, and my spells were down far enough that recharging, he
got a critical on me and killed me. Sad, sad day.

Next time, Gadget! NEXT TIIIIIIIME!

Huh. I could have sworn that it once asked if I wanted to cast it with
HP. But I'll definitely take your word for it; since it only happened
once, I may well have just tried to throw a spell from 'Z'ap rather
than 'z'ap out of habit.

Anyhow, thanks again for the help! I'll keep it in mind the next time
I get a hankering for a Trollish Druid. For now, I'm going to go back
to throwing some 'r'andoms and experiment. Hey. It's how I got this
one in the first place; never know what good combinations it might
introduce me to.

A moment of silence for that brave druid.

You know, I actualy remembered too late, (another way
of saying I forgot) to give a reminder about the cat
lord and also the greater mimic in the casino. I hate
losing great characters to those two!
For the cat lord !'s of blindness work great, and for
a pretty long time to. also cursed PoI and confusion
work great too.

Since you showed tolerance for my previous
long winded example, now I'm going to test
you with YALWE, yet another long winded
example. Seriously I'll try to stop after
this one, but I thought you might try
some of these tips for low level characters.

I'm reading the manual and all that, but I
still need to ask a question about posting
niceties. I realize that this example is
kinda off topic with a request for info on
getting trolls extra levels, but it's still
on topic with what we were talking about
in it. Should I have posted this as a new,
thread or is it ok to keep it in this one.

I also figured out why my previous dungeon
levels didn't look right to me after posting.
I had typed out the levels in ascii and
used spaces for the empty dungeon squares.
After hitting the "veiw as raw ascii button"
in my newsreader, they looked just fine.
I should have cut and pasted, or at least
remembered to use dots. Oh well, live and
learn.

Here are some tips on how to get *Realy* good
items very early in the game.

This process involves using teleportation to:
go to Darkforge, TP directly to the armour
room, gather the good stuff, TP to the weapon
toom. gather stuff, TP back to the up staircase,
ascend, TP back to the 1st staircase, and leave.

I have even accomplished this a few times with
a level one character,(grey elven mindcrafter,
for dodging and TP control.) When generating
characters for this you may want to take into
consideration their starting items, you will
need a SoMM or a WoID/SoID. It is dangerous
though, because you will have to be able to
dodge a couple of hits from a Steel Golem,
you can't hope to absorb them at low levels.

First thing I do is at Lv 1 is clear BUGWIL
to stairs. Trollish druid's can eat the corpses
to get the Dex and speed increases, and use
your herb gathering later to replenish Will
which will probably be at 1. Feel free to skip
this step if you prefer getting Lvl and Dex
up by different (and safer) means.

Next you will need a Blink Dog corpse.
The easiest way I have found is to go to the ID.
Descend to level 3-4 and repeatedly ascend and
descend until a BD is generated. They are never
generated on levels 1-2. Kick the dog on Coward
mode to anger but hopefully not kill it. Start
running from it around the dungeon room carefully.
It will eventualy summon. When killing BD's try
not to kill the original because the others are
*much* less likely to summon. I know they all
look alike, but after the original summons, just
take a step to stand next to it. As long as it
can try to hit you, it wont get bored and go away.
You are free to bolt the other dogs or hit them,
and still keep the original for re-summoning.

Third thing you will need is Teleport.
If you want to wait for TP spell to be generated
in ID, thats ok, you might get lucky. There is also
the wand of TP in the VDDL. You can get it if you
have a ? or \ of item detection. Also a SoMM works
even if unblessed just explore the VDDL completely
before reading it, This wont show the \ itself, but
it will show the # surrounding it. It will take a
few tries to get it, but just keep Ctrl T'ing those
traps till you get there.
It takes at the least 5 TP's to do this, so if you
use the wand, you will need to charge it. You can
trade some of the !'s that you got from the ID with
Yggaz to get the booze.

Here is the actual process.
Explore The NDC until you find the Steel Golem, get
him to chase you several paces away from the stairs.
TP to them and descend, this will awaken 2-3 SG's.
Cast TP, when it asks you 'where do you want to go',
move your cursor all the way down to the *very*
bottom of the screen, and left to about the middle
of the screen so that it hovers exactly above the
: on your willpower stat. Move the cursor up 4 spaces
and TP. This lands you in the weapon room. There is
a small chance (this only happened to me 3 times ever)
that the SG outside the door will wake and come through
the door to attack. This may cut your gathering short,
but it's not realy dangerous to you. If you have Seal
of the Sphears spell or a key, this wont happen.

You will land at the x

#########
#(((((((#
#(((((((#
#((((((x#######.#
#(((((((+.......#
#################

Cast TP once again, this time move the cursor so that
it hovers exactly above the : in your charisma stat,
then move the cursor straight up until it's on the same
horizontal line as the entry staircase. You will just
have to judge that by eye. Gather the armour and you
might consider equiping one, even if you don't know
if it's cursed or not, depending on how good your present
armor is. Keep in mind that DV is a bit more important
than PV for the next step.

You will land at the x

######
+x[[[#
#[[[[#
#[[[[#
#[[[[#
######

The next step, TP back to the up staircase. There is no
help for it, the SG by near the stairs is going to get a
swing at you, (there may be 2 but it's kind of rare) just
have tactics at coward and they will probably miss you.
There is a chance here, (about 1 out of 10 maybe) that the
SG will stupidly be standing on the stairs. If so you will
TP somewhere else, this can be scary but seldom dangerous,
just TP back to a room and try again. If this happens you
will need more that 5 charges on a wand.

Ascend the staircase, it will get one more swing at you.
TP again, ascend and your out.

This is something I do in almost every game I play, it
seems to work for me about 6/7 times.

I'll keep that in mind for next time. Silly me assumed that such
things wouldn't work, or I might have started flinging all sorts of
confusion-type things on him! Too much time in playing other RPGs
where bosses are mostly immune to the cheesy tricks, I suppose.

At least I was able to see invisible. Smile

As far as I know, it's OK to keep the thread. Just rename (like I
did). Topics will drift all the time, after all. By doing that, folks
who might want to answer the original topic (ha ha ha! in this case)
can find it easily and continue on. Or can more easily find the info
of the new topic, if, say, they're newbies looking for a power-start.

<snip most of YALWD>

These are actually some really good tips! I can usually find some
really good items in the UD when I get that far, but not *REALLY* good
ones. And let's face it: the Darkforge can spit out artifacts. How
great is that? ... well, not so great if you're doing the 'precrown'
thing, no. But depending on the class, it could be worth it!

Heck, if I've got the spells to do it, I'll start doing this regularly
even if I *don't* dive for DF. I don't like getting the WP down quite
that low, in case I can't generate the herb squares properly to get
Morgia, but for the sort of Dex/Speed increases this could bring? Well
worth the risk.

Here's a newbie hint for *you*, then, on this one. <n>ame the blink
dog you want to keep alive. That way, you can just hover the pointer
over it with 'l' and you can identify which is the original. I find
name to be a huge help in a lot of other things, too. Identifying
Ratling Traders. Identifying people that I've already pickpocketed and
don't want to kill (say, if I went on a pickpocket spree in Terinyo or
Dwarftown... not that I do things like this... *whistle*). Telling me
at a glance an enemy that's neutral and might be a good blocker for
something coming after me, et cetera.

Briefly off-topic: I didn't know you could get booze from him. So can
you recycle potions this way? Give him potions for booze, then give
him booze for potions until he gives you something good? Something to
test in my next game, maybe.

> Here is the actual process.

Step one: put yourself on <t>actics 'coward'? Wink Probably a good
suggestion to add in here, so they have the maximum chance of missing
you. I know *I* sure don't want to be taking any chances on getting
punched by a SG. I don't like it at level *20*. I'm sure as heck not
going to like it on level *5*. ... or whatever.

Thanks again for the suggestion! I'm going to try using this as a step
after I've done the beginning quests (Puppy Cave and Kranach) and see
how well it works out. Certainly more palatable a thought going into
the Small Cave with Eternium Armor and an Artifact Weapon than with
whatever I got lucky enough to scrounge from the PC.

I can't believe I never thought of that!
I should have started reading the newsgoups
a long time ago!

I goofed on that one. Sorry.

I normally play spellcasters, so I don't rely on
wands. But I thought I remembered something so...

I pulled up the guidebook. In appendix I Unique
NPC's it read Yggaz - Source of rumors; trades
random potions for potions of booze

I took this to mean if you gave him a random ! he
would give you booze, it's actualy the other way
around. You give him booze you get a random !.

The funny thing is I actualy tried testing this
before I posted, but made a mistake that made me
think it was true. Here it is.
..
I first generated a character that started with
potions and tried to trade, Yggaz wouldn't trade.
I was a bit confused by this, so I thought, maybe
he just won't trade for an unblessed potion. So I
stupidly turned the computer date to Dec. 31 so my
next character would start with blessed potions, to
trade with. The character started with 6 blessed
"smelly" potions. Of course Yggaz happily traded, I
think I recieved an "amber" potion.

I didn't catch the mistake until after I posted.

Again sorry.

Next time I'll test better before I suggest.

And as a side note I just lost my own Trollish
Druid just about an hour before posting this.
In the ToEF! His willpower was only 18 *with*
the water Orb. That is the downside of eating
too many bugs. I didn't get morgia in the big
room and didn't want to take the time gardening
to get it. Some druid I would make! My mana was
only 7. I abused it too much!
The ACW confused and then bolted me to death.
Next time maybe I'll try a different character too.

Wands of paralysis also do wonders, and blessed wands of poison.
Unfortunately the likes of stun ray gets shrugged off though.

It is a somewhat known tactic to raid DarkForge in this way (not
normally so early in the game as you suggest though). However, it
does have it's drawbacks. At least 1 artifact will be generated
there, reducing precrowning potential. Also at lower levels the
weapons and armour are less likely to have prefixes or suffixes - for
this reason I normally try to put off going there until my character
is a fairly high level, in the hope of finding something really
special (many times I've managed to get some good eternium armour of
resilience or something similar to last me throughout the game).

If doing this you would be best to remember to pop into the small cave
whilst you are level 1 so that the intial monsters there aren't
ridiculously hard when you later return... Also it's worth
remembering that Dex can be increased by herbs later in the game, so
using the corpses in this way might not be the best option for your
stats.

Why not teleport the golem away? Another alternative to a wand of
teleportation is trap creation (somewhat more common) - it's not hard
to find the right location to make a teleport trap. Won't help you
escape the golems downstairs, but if you're limited in teleportation
charges or only have scrolls then it can be another option.

Good suggestion!
I never tried that. It would be a lot safer to zap him
from a distance, rather than getting close enough to
toss something at him.
