Stuck in Dreamfall

OK I'm in the water heater room and I know that I should use the rag and put
some gasoline on it and then light it with the water heater pilot light but
I can't! What I mean is that the rag is in my inventory but not the
gasoline. I don't know what key strokes to use to get these two items
together. When I bring up the rag in the inventory there is only two
options, the eyeglass that tells you what the item is, and the wrench
looking tool that you can use to combine two items together that are in the
inventory but that is the problem...the gasoline is not *IN* the
inventory...it's on the bench and the only option there is to sniff the can.
When I bring up the rag in inventory there is not the third option, (the
gear looking icon to pick up or use the item). What am I missing here? How
do I get gasoline on the rag? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
