I was really afraid this was going to happen. Particularly after the article
from The Inquirer a week or so ago said that Sony hadn't shipped many
stripped down consoles for game companies to use to display playable
versions of their games and those they had shipped they hadn't given
permission for many, if any, companies to actually *use* them at E3 yet. I
said this was, at worst a possibility, here and pretty much got called an
idiot. That site may get most of their stuff wrong, but even a blind
squirrel finds a nut sometimes and this time it seems they did with the PS3
E3 info. At this point, who knows if Sony even truly got all of the problems
solved yet that they're rumored to have had in the past few months. I want
Sony to make that November launch date because if they don't they're the new
Nintendo (a once proud company that becomes a has been and a niche market)
but I won't believe they're going to make it until I see consoles sold (not
that any will be truly available in stores though) in November.
I'm really thinking about the 360. There's only one PS exclusive title I
play anymore, and that's SOCOM. That game's single player storyline was
getting pretty weak last time around so it's not like it's a huge draw IMO
anymore like SOCOM I and II were, and who knows, SOCOM may be not exclusive
this time around. The PS3 controller is going to be hard to get used to,
just like the Wii's controller. The idea of tilting to fly a plane, etc.
seems cool on the surface but IMO has the potential to be extremely annoying
and disorienting during a game, not to mention making a racing game even
harder to play with a basic controller and not a wheel IMO. Plus, if the
dual shock messed with the gyroscopes, just how sensitive must this
controller be? Are we going to see massive controller breakages way beyond
anything with PS2 because people drop them on the floor or something and the
gyroscope breaks? Replacing a controller because the gyroscope broke because
I accidentally dropped it on the floor would really piss me off. The one
thing I do like is it's wireless. But I believe the 360 has wireless
controllers you can purchase separately. (If they don't, they will soon I'm
sure knowing Sony's doing it, they'll do it too.)
Unless Sony's got some new exclusive titles, I really don't see what would
make people plunk down $500-$600 for this system when they can get the same
games with great graphics that are equal or better than the PS3 and pay for
a cheaper 360. The only exclusive I'm sure about is the Final Fantasy game,
and that'll sell some consoles, particularly in Japan. There are a couple
new franchises that may be exclusives that look interesting for the PS3,
Assassin's Creed and Resistance Fall of Man too. Sony better develop some
good exclusive franchises along with MGS that are available at launch or
shortly thereafter to help drive people to the new console like SOCOM and
GTA drove people to the PS2 or that extra chunk of change for the console is
going to hurt badly.
BTW...what about backwards compatibility with the PS1 and 2? Haven't heard
anything about that from E3.
